According to the 2017 Update (published February 2018) of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for C. difficile Infection by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and Society or Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), CDI remains a significant medical problem in hospitals, in long-term care facilities and in the community. C. difficile is one of the most common causes of health care- associated infections in U.S. hospitals (Lessa, et al, 2015, New England Journal of Medicine). Recent estimates suggest C. difficile approaches 500,000 infections annually in the U.S. and is associated with approximately 20,000 deaths annually. (Guh, 2020, New England Journal of Medicine).

Based on internal estimates, the recurrence rate of two of the three antibiotics currently used to treat CDI is between 20% and 40% among approximately 150,000 patients treated. We believe the annual incidence of CDI in the U.S. approaches 600,000 infections and has a mortality rate of approximately 9.3%.

The latest data indicate that the state of Florida faces an acute shortage that will compromise the quality of patient care if not remedied quickly.

The CNA Shortage Index estimates that as of Q2 2021, there are 6.15 CNAs leaving the profession for every 1 new CNA certified in the state of Florida.

This release of the CNA Shortage Index-published by state-approved CNA training provider Premier Nursing Academy based on data about newly minted CNAs in Q2 2021 by the Florida Board of Nursing-quantifies the staffing gap among this entry-level nursing labor force. Certified nursing assistants are a critical component of the frontline patient care workforce, including in hospitals, long-term care, dialysis, and hospice facilities, and home care settings. CNAs may also fill roles such as patient care technician or home health aide.

Evidence confirming these recent CNA staffing shortages in Florida is all the more alarming given the looming change by most healthcare employers to require Covid vaccinations among their staff in anticipation of a federal Covid vaccine mandate for all Medicare- and Medicaid-certified facilities. A widespread vaccine mandate is expected to make filling open roles in healthcare more challenging for employers, but especially for an occupation that has average Covid vaccination rates of less than 50% and provides much of the direct patient care in many facilities. Nursing homes are particularly vulnerable to CNA shortages, because CNAs make up the largest employee job group in these facilities by far, and state regulations require minimum ratios of CNAs to residents.

"The current shortage of CNAs is about to be exacerbated in a big way by self-imposed or government regulatory requirements for healthcare staff to be vaccinated against Covid," explains Matt Killday, Chief Operating Officer of Premier Nursing Academy. "Regardless of your point of view about vaccine mandates as a policy, the business and social implications are clear: the quality of patient care is at risk in many of Florida's health facilities if there are not enough qualified CNAs to employ."

Stride Autism Centers Brings Its Center-Based ABA Therapy to Nebraska

In his promotional video for the new CYR campaign, he further reveals, "One in five don't even know if they have it. I have type 2 diabetes. I was lucky. I only lost some toes. Hip-hop legend Biz Markie recently lost his life to complications related to type 2 diabetes. Knowing your risk can save your life."

The CYR video promotion seeks to encourage respondents to anonymously answer online eight questions devised by the CDC. They are then recommended to go for an annual exam that includes bloodwork and to take the results with them. They can also choose to be directed to online prevention programs and health challenges to assist them with proper nutrition, a variety of exercise programs, and the daily support and accountability they need to thrive.

"While working with the CDC's National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP), a couple of things became clear immediately," says Kenon, a Harlem-based certified lifestyle coach and fitness trainer who has personally stayed a step ahead of a 2012 prediabetes diagnosis. "People do not know they have prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Both are preventable and reversible through positive lifestyle changes in diet and exercise. I have been amazed by the health transformations of clients who have completed PLAN's DPP classes. But too few people know about these prevention programs and have access to them. We are trying to change that."

Quilted Health partners with Regence on value-based program to improve birth outcomes

Gala to end Pancreatic Cancer Raises Over $1 Million

The evening included a presentation of the inaugural Pillars of Hope Bill Palmer Legacy Award.

For the first year of this award, Tim Brown, Atlanta President of Kroger, received the award for his involvement and service, both personally and professionally.

"We have learned people are coming in earlier to diagnose pancreatic cancer," said Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, Distinguished Professor in TGen's Molecular Medicine Division. "Stage 1a early pancreas cancer 5 year survival rates have grown from 45% to 84% due to awareness with events like this gala."

During the gala, a video featured Dr. Von Hoff, describing how pancreatic cancer treatments are improving and a current clinical trial of patients on a ketogenic diet. He encouraged the fight and displayed a purple bracelet made by Lana Stowell, a local Alpharetta, Ga., youth. Everyone in the audience received one of the more than 200 bracelets made by Lana to join us together as a community.

Drink HRW Hydrogen Tablets Improve Markers of Aging in the Elderly

HRW lengthened telomeres, whereas the placebo group saw a decrease, improved brain metabolism, lowered subjective reports of pain, improved parameters within the senior fitness test, and led to strong trends regarding improvements in DNA methylation, increased antioxidant activity, and reduced oxidative stress.

Shortening telomeres have been hypothesized as being a causative factor in the aging process. As telomeres shorten, incidence of disease and deterioration increases, and survival outcomes decrease. Additionally, a decline in brain metabolism has been linked to onset of many neurological issues.

Sergej Ostojic, M.D., PH.D., Professor of Medicine at the University of Novi Sad, a senior author of the Experimental Gerontology study said, "We have been investigating hydrogen use in medicine in my lab for over a decade, and we already recognized its potential to improve metabolic health and every-day functioning in elderly. However, this study for the first time demonstrated its potential to improve several molecular and phenotypic biomarkers of aging. It's perhaps too early to say that hydrogen is an anti-aging compound but this study opens a new chapter in hydrogen research and implementation, and emphasizes several pathways linked with hydrogen action in the human body."

NPA Announces Six Scholars Selected for IMPACT Fellowship Program

ACNM Reaffirms Opposition to Legislative Threats to Abortion Care

The ACNM Code of Ethics mandates that midwives engage in the process of non-coercive, evidence-based informed consent and shared decision-making. Therefore, we object to any legislation and/or regulation that interferes with the patient-provider relationship.

Community Action Study Examines Impact of COVID-19 on Low-Income Families and Communities in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. /ScoopCloud/ -- Financial hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic are hitting low-income families in North Carolina especially hard, according to a new report released today by the North Carolina Community Action Association (NCCAA).

The study, which explored the impact of COVID-19 on low-income families and communities in North Carolina, was commissioned by NCCAA to gauge how the pandemic was affecting its efforts to combat poverty and facilitate self-sufficiency in low-income communities.

The full report is presented in two parts. Part I, "Lived Experiences of the COVID-19 Pandemic," presents the findings from focus groups with low-income families throughout the state. Part II, "Ruminations from the Frontlines of the COVID-19 Pandemic," presents the findings from key informant interviews with local leaders in low-income communities served by Community Action Agencies throughout the state.

"The voices of the people behind the numbers are equally important but heard less often, especially the voices of low-income people who have had their trials multiplied by the pandemic," said lead researcher Dr. James Johnson, Jr., director, Urban Investment Strategies. Dr. Johnson conducted the study in conjunction with researchers from the Kenan Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the Cedar Grove Institute for Sustainable Communities.

The study concluded that COVID-19 exacted a disproportionately heavy toll on low-income families, especially in terms of both exposure to and deaths from the coronavirus.

"This finding was not surprising, particularly as we know that low-wealth individuals who hurt the most are hardest hit by any catastrophe," said Sharon C. Goodson, executive director, NCCAA. The study also found vaccine hesitancy to be widespread among North Carolina's low-income families and households.

In addition to disparate exposures and deaths among the state's low-income population, the study found that the COVID-19 pandemic created major employment challenges and forced low-income households to make difficult decisions and choices regarding work versus personal safety and the health and wellbeing of their families. The shift to remote learning during the pandemic shed new light on deficiencies in the availability, access, quality, and cost of internet services for low-income families.

Focus group participants noted heightened personal and familial stress and anxiety posing, in the process, major socioemotional and mental health challenges for low-income individuals and families throughout the state.

Government safety-net programs were an important lifeline for these families but fell short of addressing the actual range of assistance low-income households needed. However, nonprofit organizations increased their efforts to provide additional financial and socio-emotional support, and basic-necessities such as food and personal protective equipment. Conversely, local governments and nonprofits have been forced to better collaborate to provide support, goods, and services to the needy in their communities.

About CD19-BCMA cCAR Therapy

iCell has developed a novel compound Chimeric Antigen Receptor (cCAR)approach. In this approach, the cCAR T cells express two distinct and fully functional CAR molecules, one that targets the molecule CD19 present on B cells and one that targets BCMA, which is present on plasma cells. In their recently published paper, researchers have shown that this cCAR led to rapid and dramatic decreases in B cell levels and levels of "autoantibodies" (antibodies that attack the body's own cells) in a patient with SLE.

As B cells are part of the normal immune system, it is preferable that the elimination of B cells be temporary. After 9 months of B cell depletion, the patient's B cells returned to normal. Importantly, the levels of autoantibodies remained undetectable. Based on these results, the researchers concluded that cCAR effectively "reset" the antibody-producing populations. In this "reset," the problematic cell populations were removed, leaving behind a fresh, clean slate. From this, new B cells and plasma cells were eventually formed, which did not have the same autoantibody-producing properties. Because of this, the patient has not had further lupus symptoms despite receiving no additional medications for over 2 years.

Given the prevalence of antibody-mediated disorders, this cCAR may prove useful for a variety of different medical conditions.

Sjögren's Syndrome, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, celiac disease, type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis all incorporate autoantibody formation in disease pathogenesis. Additionally, organ rejection following transplantation may be mediated by antibodies. By "resetting" the immune system prior to organ transplantation, this antibody-mediated rejection may be avoided. More research is needed on the long-term efficacy and safety of this treatment, but future applications of cCAR has a large window of opportunity.
