Mohima Sanyal Named 2019 Koch Kellan Scholar

She attends medical school with the personal ambition to apply her interdisciplinary perspectives towards providing excellent, accessible medical care to patients. Michigan Fibromyalgia Awareness Day Focuses on Drug-Free Strategies for Pain

Governor Matt Bevin Signs Proclamation Declaring May Lyme Disease Awareness Month in Kentucky

Jury Acquits Ex-Judge in DNR Trespass Case

AITKIN, Minn. /ScoopCloud/ -- Following a three-day trial, an Aitkin County jury recently found retired district court judge Robert Graff not guilty of trespassing in the DNR Savanna State Forest in Aitkin County, the Peterson Law Office announced today.

The Aitkin County Attorney had charged Graff with driving a pickup truck from his home near McGregor, Minnesota, across state forest land to the shore of Bass Lake. The criminal complaint asserted that vehicle traffic was illegal at that place in the forest.

The crime alleged carried possible jail up to 90 days, a fine of up to $1,000 and three times the value of damages to the land payable to DNR.

The evidence submitted against Graff was a photograph taken by a mechanical trail camera posted by a DNR conservation officer. The officer testified at trial that she could identify Mr. Graff on the trail camera photo to be the person behind the wheel of the pickup truck.

Graff was represented by Bloomington attorney Bill Peterson who argued that the game warden did not take the picture so her testimony was merely her interpretation of the photograph which the jury could determine for itself.

"Trail cameras often snap random pictures that are blurred, as here, so positive identification claimed by DNR is not possible," said Peterson. The jury agreed and acquitted Graff who did not need to testify.

"We are gratified that the jury concluded that the trail camera photograph did not prove what DNR alleged and that it exonerated Judge Graff," said Peterson.

The jury verdict ends the prosecution and the state is barred from appealing the jury's decision.

New Research Sheds Light on Potential Role of Febrile Seizures and Other Risk Factors in Sudden Deaths in Children

ROSELAND, N.J. /ScoopCloud/ -- The SUDC Foundation highlights newly-published research from the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) that identifies an increased rate of febrile seizures among children who die suddenly, both with and without explanation. The authors of the article report the need for more research to identify febrile seizure patients at higher risk, as well as other potential risk factors of sudden death in children.

The published research, entitled "Sudden Deaths in Children: Potential Role of Febrile Seizures and Other Risk Factors," examined 391 cases of both Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) and sudden, explained deaths in children between the ages of 1 and 6 years from 2001-2017. Among those studied, 28.8 percent of SUDC cases and 22.1 percent of sudden, explained cases also had a reported history of febrile seizures. In comparison, two to five percent of the general population experience febrile seizures. These findings mark the first time a significant increase in febrile seizures was found among sudden, explained child deaths.

"Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood remains a tragic disorder that claims far too many lives and has been the subject of far too little research and public awareness," said Orrin Devinsky, M.D., of New York University Langone Health.

"This study has brought us closer to understanding the causes of some SUDC cases," said Daniel Friedman, M.D., of New York University Langone Health. "In the past decade, there have significant advances in understanding the mechanisms of seizure-related sudden death in people with epilepsy through animal models. This study provides the rational for extending these models to help identify risk biomarkers and preventative strategies for SUDC as well."

"I hope our analysis provides some reassurance to families who lost children to SUDC in that we did not identify a single case of unexplained sibling death," said Laura Gould Crandall, lead author and Executive Director and Co-founder of the SUDC Foundation. "To improve our understanding of SUDC, we need population-based studies where we examine cases that better reflect the general population and are informed by standardized investigations with additional testing, including genetic testing."

SUDC is a category of death in children over the age of one year which remains unexplained after a thorough investigation and autopsy. Most often, SUDC occurs in otherwise healthy children during sleep. At least 400 children are lost to SUDC in the United States every year.

The research also indicated the children in the study were over four times more likely to die during sleep in the SUDC cases as opposed to the sudden, explained cases. And none of the children studied had a sibling who also died prematurely from SUDC.

Atlantic Coast Surgical Suites performs first navigated reverse total shoulder at an ambulatory surgery center in New England

Parsons, along with several other design surgeons and engineers, has done extensive research and development on surgical navigation in shoulder replacement and has been using this technology for almost 2 years since it became commercially available. Parsons was also the first surgeon in New Hampshire to perform a reverse shoulder replacement in 2004 and was recently inducted into the American Shoulder and Elbow surgeons, recognizing his expertise in shoulder surgery.

Ohio Marijuana Card to Give Away 15 Free Evaluations Per Month to Those in Need

SB 276: California doesn’t trust its own Medical Doctors

"A Kaiser publication reported that, according to Director Karen Smith, the California Department of Public Health is conducting a 'review of schools' where the number of vaccine exemptions appears 'biologically unlikely,'" Dr. Harte notes. "How Orwellian!" That publication reports that "questionable exemptions will be reported to the Medical Board."

Dr. Harte says: "The very willing, pharmaceutical advertising-laden news media are happy to report instances of alleged abuse of the medical exemption, creating their own fake news. Medical doctors who are willing to write these exemptions are portrayed as foolish, at best, and criminal, at worst."

He goes on: "There have already been certain doctors who have been attacked and persecuted by the press and the medical board. An example is a headline of the 'Medical Press': 'In California, some doctors sell 'medical exemptions' for kids' vaccinations,' as if the vaccine-shooting docs work for free." He continues, "I have seen this very type of "money-hungry' libel many times, against chiropractors. Considering that Medicine sucks up one-fifth of the American economy, and the very tiny minority of pediatricians who stand up to do the right thing, to make this argument, well, it's a lot of nerve and not so much brain."

According to CBS Channel 13 in Sacramento, Dr. Pan have the nerve to say "There's a very small number of physicians who have betrayed their professional oath. I think they're monetizing their license." Dr. Harte says that it is just the opposite: "It is the pediatricians who push vaccines who are betraying their professional oath, whether those vaccines are 'accepted' by the Establishment, or not. There is no question that each vaccine contains a variety of neuro- and immunotoxins, and that vaccination, as a process, subverts normal immune processes." Keep Our Seniors Safe Act Passes Senate Committee – Portantino’s SB 172

CARR partnered with Senator Portantino's office to draft the bill's provisions requiring secure firearm storage in assisted living facilities - the Keep Our Seniors Safe Act. An estimated 70 percent of assisted living residents are diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease or related dementias, yet California law neither defines nor mandates safe storage of firearms, ammunition or other dangerous weapons in assisted living facilities. The state's regulatory agency, Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division, also does not track the number of facilities allowing firearms. If enacted, this legislation would close these statutory gaps.

SB 172 also expands California's existing Child Access Prevention (CAP) laws creates new crimes for failures to properly secure firearms. CAP laws have been shown to be effective at reducing suicides and unintentional firearm deaths and injuries of children, citing a study of twelve states' where unintentional firearms deaths fell by 23 percent.

More than 11,000 Medical Residency Applicants Did Not Match Into Residency

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- On March 14, 2019 the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) released the list of applicants that applied for a Post Graduate Training slot also known as a medical "Residency." There were just over 44,600 applicants that applied for 35,000 residency positions nationwide, says Residents Medical.

The American Medical Association estimates that by the year 2025 there will be a doctor shortage of up to 35,600 primary care physicians and 60,300 non-primary specialists in the United States!

This has been an epidemic long in the making and receives very little attention. Local Orthopaedic Surgeon to Discuss Advancements in Shoulder Replacement on the World Stage

The shoulder is a highly complex joint that undergoes wear and erosion from arthritis and tendon tears. Prior studies have demonstrated that when surgeons can better recreate a patient's native anatomy during reconstructive surgery, outcomes are improved in terms of range of motion, function and implant longevity.

"GPS effectively gives us 3-dimensional, x-ray vision and greatly improves our ability to restore normal anatomy," said Parsons, who has worked extensively with Exactech, Inc. in Gainesville, Fla. to bring this technology into the operating room.

Parsons, along with an international team of surgeons and engineers, helped to develop and validate the GPS system. Recently Parsons has worked with his team to research and refine standards in the preoperative planning process that may lead to better shoulder function, lower complications and improved implant durability.

"Comparing the way different surgeons approach the same case reveals that there is currently a lack on consensus about what is the ideal reconstruction for any given shoulder," Parsons notes. His research aims to narrow the range of acceptable solutions to achieve greater precision during shoulder replacement.

Parsons' research was recently selected for presentation at the International Congress for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery this September in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Hosted every 3 years, this is the largest gathering of shoulder experts in the world and provides an international stage for the team's work. "The acceptance of our study points to the widespread interest that surgeons have in these enabling technologies. We are honored to present our results and hope we can translate this work into improved standards for shoulder replacement in the future."

Parsons and the GPS Design Team continue to advance the capabilities of this system through ongoing research and development. Canada’s Medical Residency Crisis

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Canadians are finding it difficult to land medical residencies in Canada and that's leaving their career in limbo. But there are solutions and working with Residents Medical, an education, preparatory, consulting, and placement organization, is an effective one.

In order to practice medicine in Canada, a medical school graduate must complete nationalized board tests and hands-on post graduate training in a Canadian accredited university-affiliated teaching hospital - a medical residency. And even though there are two integrated application services that help applicants apply for residencies - the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CRMS) and the National Residency Match Program (NRMP), the reality remains that there are still too many applicants for residency programs in both countries.

The unsung and marginalized victims of this cross-border residency training bottleneck are specifically Canadian International Medical Graduates (IMGs). These are Canadian citizens who go abroad to study and then return to Canada to find a residency and eventually start practicing medicine. It's more difficult for them than a Canadian Medical School graduate due to a host of issues such as visa problems, lack of USMLE preparation courses, sub-par M3 medical school rotations, no U.S. clinical or research experience or letters of recommendation.

So, what happens to this group of Canadian citizens who have gone abroad, graduated and not been matched into a medical residency in Canada or the U.S.? There are ways for a Canadian IMG to stand-out and increase their chances.

UDS Service Dogs Receives Accreditation by Assistance Dogs International
