NY Law Firm Levy Konigsberg LLP Files Class Action Lawsuit Against Rockefeller University Hospital Related to Decades of Alleged Sexual Abuse

NEW YORK, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- New York-based law firm Levy Konigsberg LLP has filed a class action lawsuit against Rockefeller University Hospital based on allegations related to the Hospital's handling of sexual abuse claims made against Dr. Reginald Archibald, a faculty member who served on the University's faculty between the 1940s and 1980s.

According to the complaint filed February 13, 2019, Archibald was a pediatric endocrinologist at the hospital and saw more than 9,000 patients over the course of his career.

The lawsuit alleges that Archibald likely molested thousands of patients in hospital examination rooms and his office and also made pornographic photos of his victims, which were kept on Rockefeller property. Furthermore, the complaint alleges that staff members were aware of both Archibald's conduct and the existence of the photographs and did not disclose either.

LK lawyers representing the plaintiffs allege that complaints regarding Archibald go back to at least the 1990s, and Rockefeller University admits that it has been aware of the abuse since 2004 at the latest.

The complaint further claims that the University waited until 2018 to contact former patients and that the shock of receiving an unsolicited communication from the facility that facilitated Archibald's abuse caused severe emotional distress and invaded patients' privacy.

The lawsuit is seeking compensatory, punitive, and exemplary damages for past and future pain and suffering and past and future emotional distress and mental anguish, costs of future counseling, therapy, and medical treatment related to the injuries inflicted by the defendant, pre-judgment and post-judgment interest, attorneys' fees, and various other forms of relief.

New Wellness Council Partnership Aims to Combat Indiana Obesity Rates

Large Number of Medical Residency Applicants Receive Rejections

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- This year marked the 16th consecutive increase in the number of medical residency positions offered and Residents Medical, an educational and residency placement organization, is taking notice.

According to the National Residents Matching Program, this year an all-time high of 30,232 PGY-1 positions were offered. The trend in the total number of applicants is even more dramatic. In 1952, there were 6,000 and in 1999 there were more than 36,000. After a brief decline between 1999 and 2003 (about 5,000), those number have continued to rise again. In 2018, the number of applicants reached an all-time high of nearly 44,000.

The bottom line? There are more applicants than residency slots.

Beyond these stats, the competition is fierce. The medical residency application pool comes from a worldwide database of medical school graduates. Out of these applicants, some come from foreign schools and are required to obtain visas. Many U.S. citizens have also completed medical school abroad to finish up the residency part of their training in order to obtain board-certification.

This year a record number of applicants have received rejection notices for an interview from the residency training programs they applied to. In order for a residency applicant to become a residency candidate they must have at least one interview. The residency programs are just too overwhelmed. In fact, at some primary care residency programs there are more than 5,000 applicants for a few dozen slots.

Flu Prevention Tips for the 2018 – 2019 Flu Season from Primary Care Physicians of Florida

Wash Hands Often:
Probably the easiest way to prevent the spread of the flu is by washing hands often with hot water and anti-bacterial soap for at least 20 seconds. But don't forget to dry hands afterwards, because the flu loves damp surfaces.

Wipe Down Surfaces in Common Areas:
The flu is a hearty virus that can survive on hard surfaces anywhere from 24 to 48-hours, so it is important that they are wiped them down with disinfectant at least once a day, particularly in common areas where many people get together such as conference rooms, break areas, bathrooms, and on objects such as door handles, snack and soda machines, microwaves, light switches, and any other surface that might be touched by more than one person every day. They can be cleaned with products containing soap, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, and chlorine.

Avoid Touching the Eyes, Nose and Mouth:
Flu enters the body through the soft tissues of the nose, mouth and (most often) the eyes. So, if you have a habit of touching your face, rubbing the eyes or nose, break that habit. This is the easiest way to contract the flu. Because flu spreads through tiny droplets that often land on one's hands, touching eyes, nose or mouth, passes the virus into the body. Prevent the spread flu by keeping hands away from the face.

Stay Home If Sick:
Don't be one of those people who want to prove their dedication to their co-workers by coming to work while sick. This won't be any good for anyone at the workplace. During the past 30 years melanoma rates have been on the rise. In 2018, it is estimated that 91,270 people will be diagnosed with melanoma, and that 9,320 will die from this form of skin cancer. Sylvester offers a world-class melanoma surveillance and detection clinic, immunotherapy clinical trials, advanced expertise in immunohistochemistry and tumor markers. In addition, Sylvester is one of the few institutions to offer reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) which differentiates melanoma from less serious skin lesions.

Dr. Kevin Berkowitz, a generous supporter of The Pap Corps, established the first end of year matching campaign in 2014 and it now continues in his memory.

Residents Medical Creates Pathways for Medical Residency Applicants

SUDC Foundation Applauds Introduction of Federal Bill to Address Unexpected Child, Infant Deaths

Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) is a category of death in children over the age of one year which remains unexplained after a thorough investigation and autopsy. Most often, SUDC occurs in otherwise healthy children during sleep. At least 400 children are lost to SUDC in the United States every year.

"This legislation is named 'Scarlett's Sunshine' after a little girl who was lost to Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood," said Senator Casey. "I wanted to honor Scarlett's memory and make sure that the federal government is taking all possible steps to ensure that no family will have to suffer the death of a child, without knowing why. It's appalling that over 400 children ages 1-4 and over 3,600 infants each year are dying from these unexplained causes. I urge my colleagues to join us in this bipartisan, bicameral effort."

"Wisconsin has the highest rate of Black infant mortality in the nation. Our babies die at rates comparable to war-torn countries like Syria," said Representative Moore. "This doesn't have anything to do with good or bad parenting. But because there are no nationwide standards for investigations and data collection, parents are often left wondering what went wrong and what they could have done to prevent their baby from dying. No mother, no matter her background, should have to with live with this uncertainty, thinking it was their fault. That's why this bipartisan and bicameral bill to fund critical data collection is a game changer. We need to know the root of the problem to solve it."

Specifically, it would supply grants to help states and municipalities to improve data collection and death scene investigations related to unexpected infant and child deaths and ensure death reviews are completed for 100 percent of infant and child fatalities. Currently, there are no nationwide standards for investigating and collecting data following an infant or child death. This makes it nearly impossible to determine the causes of these deaths and what strategies our country can implement to prevent these tragedies.

This bill has also been endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Children's Hospital Association, Cribs for Kids, First Candle, March of Dimes, Kids in Danger, Within Our Reach and the Aaron Matthew SIDS Guild of Seattle Children's Hospital.

New Billboard Campaign in FIVE U.S. Cities Honoring Healthy 2-Year Old Who Died Last Year Just Days After Vaccines

SYRACUSE, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- This week, the non-profit Learn The Risk launched five billboards on the East Coast, including New York and Boston, honoring Nicholas Catone, a healthy 20-month old boy who lost his life to vaccines.

On September 8, 2018 Nicholas Catone should have been celebrating his 3rd birthday -- but he didn't. Nicholas, the little boy pictured in the billboard, died just days after receiving his routine childhood vaccines. His death, like thousands of others every year, was labeled Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

The five-city billboard campaign aims to raise awareness of vaccine side effects, including death, as listed on vaccine product inserts and as shown in scientific reports published in leading medical journals (*Note 1). When multiple vaccines are given at one time, the risk of serious side effects increases and the campaign aims to help parents make educated choices for their families.

"You get angry because his death could have been prevented. Nobody ever mentioned any of this to us," said Nick Catone, Nicholas's father in an interview with News12, New Jersey (*Note 2).

The Health & Human Services (HHS) branch of the U.S. Government has received more than 7,000 reports of deaths linked to vaccinations, and more than 580,000 reports of serious side effects, according to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (*Note 3). An HHS report on VAERS done by Harvard Medical School found that "fewer than 1 percent of vaccine adverse events are reported." (*Note 4)

Given this estimate, vaccine-related deaths could be closer to 700,000, while serious side effects would be in the millions. Yet many parents are not told about side effects of vaccines until it's too late.

Many of these deaths occur in children under one year old after receiving one of the 35 childhood vaccines on the U.S. schedule given to infants. Most deaths are labeled SIDs, which is purely a label for deaths with an unknown reason. More than 23,000 U.S. children die in the U.S. before their first birthday, with most deaths being labeled as unknown cause or SIDS (*Note 5).
