Geek Club Books for Autism is selected to Receive 2017 JL Simmons Non-Profit PR Grant

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Geek Club Books, a 501(c)(3) focused on autism education and empowerment, today announced that it has been selected to receive the J.L. Simmons Non-Profit PR Grant for 2017/18. The Grants, launched in 2000 by Neotrope(R) helps worthy causes raise visibility to media and public for the charity's good works.

With this commitment, Neotrope again aligns itself with Geek Club Books' efforts in addressing public awareness and acceptance of those on the autism spectrum, as well as employment opportunities for autistic adults.

As part of this in-kind grant program, Neotrope(R) is providing news dissemination (through its Send2Press(R) Newswire service), and social media marketing for Geek Club Books for Autism for 12 months starting in 2017 and running into 2018. This program is intended to help raise awareness of the charity to traditional media, to the public, as well as potential sponsors and donors, regarding their efforts.

"Today one in 68 children are diagnosed with autism in the United States and yet, the general public understands very little about the diagnosis - and what they do know is often shrouded in misperceptions and negative stereotypes," says Jodi Murphy, founder of Geek Club Books. "With Neotrope's help, we can better spread awareness, understanding and to dispel myths about individuals with autism."

"We're truly honored in providing this service grant to the folks at Geek Club Books," said Neotrope CEO, Christopher Laird Simmons. "The many programs they offer are noteworthy including their Autism Acceptance Ambassador Initiative, which finds local parents and teachers who want to advocate and educate for positive change."

Fallen Officer’s Memory Kept Alive Through Mark Dunakin Memorial Award for Extraordinary Achievement

SACRAMENTO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Sergeant Orrlando Mayes with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department is the 2017 recipient of the Mark Dunakin Memorial Award for Extraordinary Achievement, the Union Institute & University announced today.

The graduation was held Sunday, August 13 where the award was presented.

The 25-year law enforcement veteran is humbled by the honor. "I am grateful to be considered in the same league as Sergeant Dunakin," said Mayes.

The Mark Dunakin Memorial Award was established to honor the memory of Sergeant Dunakin, a UI&U student who tragically lost his life on March 21, 2009, at the age of 40, when he and three other Oakland police officers were killed in the line of duty.

The award is presented to a new graduate of the Union Institute & University Sacramento Academic Center Criminal Justice Management program who serves in law enforcement and who emulates Sergeant Dunakin's commitment to community service, academic success, and enthusiasm for Union's Criminal Justice Management program.

The faculty noted Mayes was a perfect match for the criteria, particularly in his thoughtful approach and his desire to go above and beyond in everything he does.

The father of four decided early that he wanted to be in the law enforcement profession and that he wanted a college degree. "I was in the eighth-grade when I set a goal of completing my college degree. That day is here and I credit my family, especially my grandmother, for supporting me and my dreams."

Mayes is grateful for his career. "Helping people is my calling. I get more from them than they get from me. Every time I help someone, I walk away with perspective and empathy toward others."

Sergeant Mayes currently serves as the Academy Director for the Sacramento Sheriff's Academy. Prior to being promoted to sergeant, he spent 14 years on the SWAT team as the Assistant Team Leader. As sergeant, he remains active as an auxiliary SWAT team member.

In 2010, Sergeant Mayes was involved in one of California's longest hostage standoffs, during which he participated with his team to help save the life of a 16-month-old child after 56 hours of intense negotiation. He was recently reunited with the child, who has said he wants to be a police officer just like Mayes. And, the child's uncle, who was deployed overseas with the military at the time of the standoff, was so inspired by the officers' work that he is now a deputy with the Sacramento County Sherriff's Department.

"My goal of earning my college degree is a dream come true," said Mayes. "I was born and raised in Oakland. I didn't know Sergeant Dunakin, but I attended his funeral," said Mayes. "I will cherish this honor."

The other recipients of the Union Institute & University Mark Dunakin Memorial Award for Extraordinary Achievement are:
* 2011 - Isabel Resendez
* 2013 - Frederick Henry Bobbitt Jr. and Tony Silva
* 2015 - Ray Framstad
* 2016 - Sergio Lepe.

The Everest Foundation Helps to Fund Medical Residency Positions and Fund Research at Teaching Hospitals

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- It has been an enormously successful year for almost two dozen Everest Foundation Scholars who are actively working on research projects for submission and hopeful publication in esteemed medical journals as well as starting their medical residency training in coveted ACGME Accredited residency programs across the U.S.

The Everest Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports medical research, domestic and global health initiatives and even residency positions with a number of U.S medical schools and community-based hospitals. With a mission statement that spells out its mandate: "Part of the Cure," The Everest Foundation has a laser focus on the advancement of (GME) Graduate Medical Education during these exciting and challenging times for U.S. healthcare.

This year, two distinguished Everest Foundation Scholars were recognized for their extraordinary gifts. Dr. R. Sahni, a medical graduate from India, was awarded "Resident of the Year" at the University of Alabama SOM Internal Medicine Residency Program; and Dr. Milad Modarresi was awarded first place in the state of West Virginia for his research poster presentation at the 12th Annual West Virginia Geriatric Society Scientific Assembly.

Sahni has also been featured in a nationwide webinar for Residents Medical which platformed his commitment to gain the skills and experience for residency while Modarresi was later highlighted for a second time as a researcher with West Virginia Congressman, Evan Jenkins, at a conference focused on opioid use and problems facing the state.

Sahni had been an Everest Foundation Scholar for two years overseeing research projects and publications at both New York's Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the James A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii, respectively.

Initially, having trouble obtaining a medical residency, Sahni was recommended to The Everest Foundation by Residents Medical, an educational company in California that specializes in preparing medical students and graduates a strong CV necessary for residency by making them prolific researchers and clinicians. This pathway has worked for many Everest Foundation Scholars throughout the years, including Sahni. The pathway worked for Sahni who matched in SOAP last year, in part due to his excellent research work at Icahn and at Burn Schools of Medicine, respectively.

This year, Modarresi matched into a General Surgery program at Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, where he was doing his lauded research work as an Everest Foundation Scholar and Fellow in Orthopedics.

It's no secret that research publication in any specialty often ranks residency candidates higher when applying for GME positions, according to many program directors.

"Part of our mission is to support the 'six core competencies' of the ACGME with all of our initiatives and Scholars, so we hope to continue to make a positive impact on GME programs across America," Mrs. Agata Everest, chairperson of The Everest Foundation, says.

Mrs. Everest, a former healthcare clinician from Europe, underscores that U.S. and foreign medical graduates (FMGs) know that the application competition for residency is getting tougher and tougher.

"Each year, nearly 1,000 U.S. medical school graduates and approximately 11,000 foreign medical graduates are not matching into residency," Mrs. Everest says. "And nearly 5,000 of the more than 43,000 applicants, mostly FMGs, are not getting any interviews at all after applying into the National Residency Matching Program."

Every year, The Everest Foundation helps many of its research scholars and fellows into residency as they work to navigate these daunting numbers. Projections for the years ahead look equally challenging. So, graduate medical students and graduates who conduct real paradigm changing research and clinical work with The Everest Foundation are reaping positive benefits.

"Dr. Sahni and Dr. Modarresi are celebrated success stories. They are an inspiration to our current Everest Scholars," Mrs. Everest says. "We're trying to improve patient care with better research and prepared physicians as a foundation, but we're also happy that we can assist many of our fellows become board certified doctors by doing residency."

By supporting medical residency training programs, our foundation addresses both the great "Bottleneck" of medical school graduates looking to land a medical residency slot and address the doctor shortage in America. We get to see many of our Everest Foundation Scholars and Fellows become board certified doctors, all the while supporting Residency Training Programs and Graduate Medical Education at Schools of Medicine who don't always get all the support they need.

Nationally Renowned Research Doctor Will Discuss His New Hopes, Methods, and Successes with Treating Rare Children’s Cancers on Nov. 5, 2017

LAKE FOREST, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Jareds Juggernaut To Cure Sarcoma, a non-profit which funds researchers of body sparing cancer treatments targeted for rare children's cancers, today announced an event which features Dr. Charles Keller as the keynote speaker, which will take place on November 5, 2017 in the Sun and Sail Club in Lake Forest, Calif.

While many types of cancers have had improved survival outcomes over recent years due to new drugs and other clinical innovations, there are certain cancers that have not progressed appreciably in their survival rates or in developing new methodologies and drug protocols for decades.

Unfortunately, these cancers primarily affect children and young adults. Since the number of patients diagnosed with these deadly diseases annually is small, compared with other types of cancers, such as breast, prostate and colon, they are treated as "orphan" diseases which translate into less emphasis by the drug companies and medical establishment in finding treatments and cures for these forms of cancer.

It is therefore left to dedicated researchers and grass roots support groups to "pick up the slack" and help those kids afflicted with these deadly diseases by finding new drug protocols and techniques to stop the cancers from metastasizing at worst or to stop the cancer cells from developing at best.

Dr. Charles Keller founded the Children's Cancer Therapy Development Institute in Oregon to bridge scientific discovery and the initiation of clinical trials.

Charles's research focuses on the development of more effective, less toxic therapies for childhood cancers. His special interest is advanced disease that has spread beyond the initial location of the cancer. Charles co-chairs the brain tumor developmental therapeutics committee (CNS-DVL) of the Children's Oncology Group and is a member of the soft tissue sarcoma (STS) committee of Children's Oncology Group.

He recently completed a 5-year rotation as a Standing Member of the National Cancer Institute NCI-I Study Section. Charles has authored over 80 scientific publications and is a recognized expert in the biology of childhood sarcomas and the preclinical investigation of childhood cancers. Charles is also a co-founder of First Ascent Biomedical, a company developing personalized medical approaches to therapy for canine and human solid tumor patients.

Dr. Keller will be speaking on November 5, 2017 at the Sun and Sail Club on Lake Forest Drive in Lake Forest California. He will be discussing his research objectives and some of the resultant outcomes and successes. His keynote speech will be part of an event that will go from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Entertainment and refreshments will be available as well as dancing will be encouraged.

The cost for the event is $28 per person with all proceeds going to cancer research. Since the sponsor is a non-profit 501(c)(3), the ticket price will be tax deductible.

About Jareds Juggernaut To Cure Sarcoma (JJCUR):

JJCUR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit which was started after the founders' 26 year old son, Jared Steven Grossman, died after fighting Rhabdomyosarcoma for five years. The protocol that Jared was given was one that was in place for twenty years and had a less than 20 percent survival rate for his stage of the disease. We found that the chemo and radiation was almost as devastating to Jared's body as the cancer itself and, after he died, we vowed that we would work hard to support researchers who were innovative and looked for body sparing methods to fight cancers.

In Florida, 87 Animals Rescued in a Massive Animal Hoarding Case

FREEPORT, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- Over the past week, Alaqua Animal Refuge, a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary located in Northwest Florida, has been leading a case in Vernon, Florida where a large number of animals were left to the care of Alaqua after their owner passed away.

The woman, a breeder of Great Pyrenees, once bred award winning dogs but over the past 10 years her physical health had deteriorated to the point that she was confined to a wheelchair. The dogs began a downward spiral of their physical condition, and the elaborate yards built to hold them no longer did. Uncontrolled breeding and lack of care for the dogs had been going on for years and the scene was deplorable.

Thirteen of the dogs and 10 of the cats - the critical, old, and young - were brought to Alaqua for urgent care. On Monday, the remaining 55 dogs and nine cats were rescued and it was no small feat. Alaqua Animal Refuge was joined by 12 rescue groups and organizations from across the United States to aid in this monumental and impressive rescue effort. After a week of extensive planning and coordination, it took a total of 45 people, all day, to get these massive dogs out of the house and off the property to safety.

Alaqua Founder Laurie Hood said, "I am personally grateful to the Lucky Puppy Rescue who played a key role and was instrumental in providing essential daily food, water, and care for these dogs until they all could be rescued. It was important to create a relationship with these dogs and connect with them early to reduce their stress."

After the dogs are thoroughly rehabilitated, they will be available for adoption through one of the rescue groups that assisted in this huge endeavor. Many of the rescue groups specialize in larger breeds, especially Great Pyrenees, and they always have many gentle giants in need of loving homes.

Rescue organizations that assisted in the relief effort included The Humane Society of the United States; The Lucky Puppy Rescue; Florida State Animal Response Coalition; Big Bend Disaster Animal Response Team; Great Pyrenees Club of America; Tri-County Animal Rescue; Big Fluffy Dog Rescue; Tallahassee Big Dog Rescue; Leon County Humane Society; Great Pyrenees Club of Western Pennsylvania Rescue; Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team; and Florida Great Pyrenees Rescue & Club.

"I was proud to offer advice and on-site assistance to Alaqua Animal Refuge in the rescue of the Great Pyrenees," said Laura Bevan, the director of the Southern Region for the Humane Society of the United States. "These dogs have been living in filth with little human contact or medical care for a long time, and it is only because of Laurie Hood's persistence that these dogs are now on their journey to become the beloved companion animals they were always meant to be."

"The team of volunteers, rescue groups, and staff that Laurie put together did a phenomenal job of humanely removing the dogs from the property and evaluating them for transport to the facilities where they will be rehabilitated. Overall, the rescue couldn't have been done any better," said Bevan.

Terri Sandlak, who is the director for the Florida Great Pyrenees Rescue, concurred that the rescue was "unbelievably organized, and is a good example of what other organizations should follow when similar situations happen again."

The presence and support of local law enforcement is always an invaluable one, especially in cases such as this. With animal hoarding and abandonment cases, among others, local officials' involvement is key. Animals' lives, both present and future, depend on it, as does future laws protecting animals against neglect, cruelty, or hoarding.

"We witnessed an amazing effort to care for these animals, who were in desperate need. As we arrived on scene, it was apparent that Alaqua Animal Refuge had a strategic plan put in place to rescue these animals in the most effective and safest way possible," said Washington County Sheriff Kevin Crews. "The dedication, skill, and knowledge that this organization has could not be more evident."

This was certainly a team effort, based on a passion and love for these majestic animals. From the first dog that was taken out of the house and walked on a leash to his transport to the last one that had to be carried out because he could barely walk-their eyes told their life stories. It filled many of the volunteers that were onsite with tears, with smiles, and with love and appreciation for the human spirit wanting to help.

Although an incredibly heartbreaking situation, including the loss of life of the dogs' owner, this massive rescue ended on a positive note, as they are getting their second chance-at life and to find a loving permanent home, again.

The rescue of these 87 animals has incurred an enormous amount of expenses, especially in medical evaluations and treatments. The daily work at Alaqua Animal Refuge, including large rescues such as this, could not be done without the support of our community and beyond.

About Alaqua Animal Refuge:
Alaqua Animal Refuge is a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary, located in the panhandle of Florida. A member of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, Alaqua believes that every abused, neglected and homeless animal deserves a second chance. Committed to providing protection, shelter and care to animals in need, this private, 501(c)(3) non-profit Refuge also offers a full-service adoption center, educational outreach, and community programs that extend far beyond their geographic location.

Since its inception in 2007, Alaqua has become a recognized leader in animal rescue, welfare, cruelty prevention, and advocacy. Alaqua is currently in the midst of a relocation and expansion capital campaign to build a one-of-a-kind facility - the first in the United States - on 100 donated acres. The new facility and sanctuary will allow Alaqua to continue all of the important work that is done now, as well as be an educational and training center to empower others to help animals and recreate the model worldwide.

About The Mugadi Foundation:

The mission of The Mugadi Foundation is to help children and young adults around the world, particularly in the Global South. The Mugadi Foundation was founded by Michael Odokara-Okigbo when he was 14. Mugadi (which means "I will live" in the Igbo language) is a 501(c)(3) organization created in 2004 to help pay for the school fees granted to orphanages located in Lagos, Nigeria. The foundation was established due to a trip he made with his mother to an HIV/AIDS orphanage in November, 2004.

Odokara-Okigbo was shocked with how much trouble they had finding for education, but most interestingly to him, he was surprised to see how similar these children were to him. When he returned, he decided to make a difference in those children's lives, he created a photo exhibition of fourteen stories, and showed it in hospitals, schools and museums. It was a huge success, and prompted him to create the Mugadi Foundation.

Chef Sean Brock Honored by Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America for Awareness Efforts

NEW YORK, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA), the nonprofit dedicated to raising research funds for and awareness of the neuromuscular disease myasthenia gravis (MG), announces that Chef Sean Brock has graciously volunteered to be an Awareness Ambassador for the organization.

The highly acclaimed chef, most known for his Southern culinary creations and his work on The Mind of a Chef, has spoken out about the challenges he faced in getting diagnosed and managing MG, and has begun planning a series of exclusive dinners aimed at raising funds for the MGFA's mission.

"I clearly had the symptoms of MG, yet it took some of the best doctors in the world 18 months to confirm my diagnosis, and there's no cure," said Brock. "Unless we can fund research that can lead to a cure, we, myself and others with MG, continue to manage the symptoms in the best way that we can."

Brock experienced double vision that made it difficult to walk and impossible for him to drive, and this weakness of his eyes also caused one eyelid to droop so it was nearly closed while the other became stuck wide open. This was not only uncomfortable for dealings with customers, but also made it painful to be in the sunlight, and contributed to further vision issues. While a drooping eyelid is among the classic symptoms of the disease, Brock was among the 10 - 20 percent of patients who have the disease but test negative for MG in bloodwork, making it a challenge for physicians to diagnose.

Brock responded well to treatment, a clear sign that he truly has MG, but fears that his condition could one day worsen, and hopes that research will be ahead of his MG.

"MG is a very challenging condition because of the profound impact it can have on muscle strength and daily activities that most of us take for granted. It is particularly hard to have a disease most people have never heard of -- and for which there is no cure," shared Nancy Law, chief executive officer, MGFA. "We applaud Chef Brock for giving a voice to other patients with MG who have experienced similar frustrations and barriers to diagnosis."

Chef Brock will continue to share his experiences, and more information about his fundraising efforts will be available on http://www.myasthenia.org/ in the coming months.

About Myasthenia Gravis (MG):
Myasthenia gravis is a disorder causing extreme muscle weakness that can impact a person's ability to see, eat, walk - and even to breathe or to smile. The condition is rare and non-contagious, and affects people of all races, genders and ages. In MG, the body's immune system attacks the connection between the nerves and the muscles, which limits the ability of the brain to control muscle movement.

The degree of muscle weakness can vary from person to person, and day to day. Due to the high number of misdiagnoses, the precise number of people with MG is unknown, but MG is estimated to affect approximately 100,000 Americans. There are effective treatments for most, but not all with MG. There is currently no cure.

About The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America:
Founded in 1952, the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) is the only national volunteer health agency dedicated solely to the fight against the debilitating disease, myasthenia gravis. MGFA is committed to finding a cure for myasthenia gravis and closely related diseases, improving treatment options and providing information and support to people with myasthenia gravis through research, education, community programs and advocacy. MGFA serves patients, their families and caregivers through support groups and educational programs.

Student Overcomes the Odds to Receive $1.8 Million In Scholarships, Including Full Scholarships to 6 Top Colleges

MARIETTA, Ga. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Foundation for Ensuring Access and Equity today announced that on Sunday, May 28, 2017 the Turner Chapel AME Church in Marietta, Georgia will host its 10th Annual High School Graduation Celebration Worship Service. The blessings will be flowing for several students who have been offered full college scholarships. However, for Paulding County High School's Kimberly Hadaway, the blessings are overflowing with full scholarships to 6 of the country's top colleges: Princeton, Duke, Vanderbilt, Washington and Lee, Amherst, and Williams.

For the past ten years, the church's Education Ministry Leaders, Mychal and Nina Wynn, a college planning couple, who operate the Foundation for Ensuring Access and Equity's nationally recognized 'College Planning Cohort(TM) Program' began inspiring elementary school students through the church's biannual academic celebrations to aspire toward big college-bound dreams.

As a third grader, Kimberly approached Mr. Wynn with a request, "Mr. Wynn, I want to go to college and my mother cannot afford to pay for me to go to college. Since you know all of this college planning stuff, tell me what I need to do."

Since that fateful request for help, the Wynns have been guiding Kimberly's college trajectory. First, through test prep for Georgia's CRCT testing as an elementary and middle school student. Then, by developing a 7-year middle-through-high school course schedule, heavy in advanced math, science, and Advanced Placement classes. Then, by encouraging Kimberly to make a commitment to leadership and community service. Finally, putting Kimberly on the radar of selective institutions with need-based, 'no loans,' financial aid policies by applying to their 'Diversity Weekend' programs.

Kimberly and her mother worked together as a team to follow the plan. The three-way partnership of Kimberly doing the work, her mother providing the support, and the Turner Chapel Education Ministry providing the guidance, achieved remarkable results. With grit and determination, Kimberly took each class that Mr. Wynn outlined, earned an 'A' in each class, earned a final grade of 100+ over 50 times, earned a passing score on 17 AP exams, and achieved an ACT Score in the 99th percentile nationally ('33')by Mr. Wynn's deadline--June of her junior year of high school.

Kimberly's full college scholarship offers could not come at a better time. After suffering through years of long-term unemployment, Kimberly's single-parent mother has lost their home to foreclosure. Kimberly and her mom will be vacating their home within days following Kimberly's graduation, as class salutatorian, at Paulding County High School. As her mom seeks temporary housing, Kimberly will be on her way, on a full scholarship and an all-expenses paid 'Summer Science Program' at the top ranked liberal arts college in the United States--Williams College where she will major in mathematics.

Kimberly is 1 of 183 high school seniors from throughout the State of Georgia to be selected as 2017 Georgia Scholars, will serve on the National Elks Scholar Advisory Board, and was offered admission to the prestigious Meyerhoff Scholars Program at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Kimberly was also offered admission and scholarships to Swarthmore, Xavier University of Louisiana, Spelman College, and Howard University.

Mr. Wynn reflects on Kimberly's remarkable achievement, "The advice that we offered Kimberly, as a third grader, is the same as we offer every student--a student's coursework, grades, and test scores represent the most direct pathway to being offered a full college scholarship. As a result of accepting our guidance, putting forth the effort to become a top student, and applying to the 'right' colleges, Kimberly is deserving of her $1.8 million in scholarship offers."

Kimberly's mother, Yvette Ifill, still overwhelmed by the enormity of it all, comments, "I am a native of Guyana who knew nothing about the U.S. public education system. Without the Wynns guidance, the Turner Chapel AME Church's College Planning Cohort, and our small group coach, Mrs. Kim Sackey, this would not have been possible. My daughter has always been a good student, but being a good student is not enough. The Wynns exposed Kimberly to Diversity Weekend opportunities, reviewed all of her college essays, assisted her in preparing for interviews, and interacted with college admissions and financial aid officers on our behalf. They have held our hand, step-by-step since Kimberly was in elementary school."

Rev. Don Ezell, Youth Pastor of the Turner Chapel AME Church, notes, "For the past 10 years, as Education Ministry Leaders, Mychal and Nina Wynn, have been guiding students in our church into top colleges and millions of dollars in scholarships. Many of our students have attended the best undergraduate programs on full scholarships, with many of whom now attending and graduating from the best graduate schools, law schools, and medical school programs. As a parent, I cannot think of anyone better qualified to assist students with their college planning, particularly students from lower-income families. This year, we also have students who have received full scholarship offers to Amherst College, Clark Atlanta, Tennessee State, Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis, Brenau, and Dillard University."

In addition to providing private college planning consulting, the Wynns College Planning Cohort(TM) Program has been implemented in the Guilford County Schools (NC), Florence County School District 3 (SC), and Judson ISD (TX); has been adopted by the faith-based, Crossroads for Teens program; and is currently under review by Clemson University as a National Dropout Prevention Model.

Open Letter from City Leaders Calls for Prevailing Wages in State Housing Reforms

SACRAMENTO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- In an open letter that ran as a full page ad in today's Sacramento Bee, elected leaders from six of California's eight largest cities called on California Governor Jerry Brown and the State Legislature to include prevailing wage standards in state housing reforms. The ad was paid for by Smart Cities Prevail (SCP).

The Legislature is currently considering a range of proposals aimed at combating California's persistent housing affordability crisis.

Click Here to View the Ad (PDF): http://www.smartcitiesprevail.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/24/2017/05/SacBeeAd.pdf.

Smart Cities Prevail (SCP) is a non-profit research organization that focuses on wage policies and contracting standards in the construction industry. The ad was signed by a group of local elected officials from the cities of San Diego, Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, and Sacramento.

The ad references ongoing efforts to streamline more housing development - with several proposals under consideration to combat California's persistent housing affordability crisis again this year.

"Real housing reform needs to do more than simply streamline more development," the leaders write. "We need to promote investment in the people who are doing the building, and struggling to pay the rent in our communities."

The ad highlights findings from a new SCP study entitled, "The Value of Linking Good Construction Jobs to California's Housing Reforms (http://www.smartcitiesprevail.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/24/2017/03/SCP_HousingReport.0314.pdf)."

Utilizing Economic Census data and industry standard data analysis, this study highlights how a variety of factors are contributing to California's housing affordability crisis-including significant increases in profits for developers and builders, shrinking wages for blue-collar construction workers, and declining productivity for the construction industry as a whole. It concludes that including prevailing wage standards in state housing reforms would help the industry attract and develop the skills needed to boost housing supply, while also helping to close the affordability gap for working families, reducing racial disparities in pay, and saving taxpayers tens of millions of dollars per year by reducing reliance on public assistance.

"With real blue-collar construction wages down 25 percent over the last two decades, the suggestion that labor costs hinder the construction of more housing supply is simply not supported by the facts or the financial realities of the industry," said study author Alex Lantsberg. "With housing prices and profits soaring, the industry is well positioned to invest in productivity and affordability for its own workforce. We can make good progress towards both objectives by incorporating prevailing wage standards into state housing reforms."

Smart Cities Prevail has also posted today's open letter online. Members of the public who want to lend their voice in support of including prevailing wage in state housing reforms can do so at: http://www.smartcitiesprevail.org/housingpetition/.

Bake Sale to Raise C. diff. Awareness Starts in Florida Before Volunteers Roll-out Worldwide

TAMPA, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- C Diff Foundation announces its "Bake Sale for C.diff. Awareness," a month-long campaign beginning May 2017 in Florida and continuing in N.J., N.C., and across the USA to India, and Italy featuring education and advocacy on health care topics pertaining to the most common pathogen identified as a leading healthcare-associated infection (HAI) in U.S. hospitals alone: Clostridium difficile.

You know how when you are trying to promote Clostridium difficile (C.diff.) awareness, you run into obstacles - such as information resistance and lack of concern.

We have experienced it, learned from it, and developed new roads to successfully accomplish the goal to effectively promote C.difficile infection (CDI) awareness prevention, treatments, environmental safety, and support available.

Nearly half a million Americans suffer from Clostridium difficile (C. diff.) infections in a single year according to a study released February 2015 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). About 15,000 deaths were estimated to be directly attributable to C. diff. infections.

Previous studies indicate that C. diff. has become the most common microbial cause of healthcare-associated infections found in U.S. hospitals driving up costs to $4.8 billion each year.

The C Diff Foundation takes it to a different level to promote the message and receive the audience's nod generously donating funds to support educational patient programs offered. We do this by having residents share in a common-interest event - a "Bake Sale for C. diff. Awareness."

Who are the audiences? They are you, neighbors, local health care professionals, local service operators -- both students and faculty -- and individuals with a will to join the events to learn about a C. difficile infection because it can be acquired by anyone and has no boundaries.

At first the residents, health care professionals, and local service professionals show resistance to listen about how a gastrointestinal infection, that they have never experienced, can cause such pain and tragic losses.

Once they are introduced to Kathy, Nancy, Lisa, Roy, Scott, Angelo, Tonia, Renetta, Gary, Deborah, and thousands of other Clostridium difficile (C.diff.) Survivors (www.cdiffsurvivors.org) and hear their heart-breaking C. difficile infection journeys - the door swings open and the understanding takes hold.

As a result, we witness an exchange of important information with the positive outcome of understanding how dangerous a C. difficile infection can be, how important it is to have a conversation with health care providers about the use of antibiotics to treat respiratory, urinary, and dental symptoms, how to manage the care of a C. diff. infection at home, and support sessions that are free and available by phone to everyone needing a voice that understands able to guide families worldwide.

"The Worldwide Bake Sale for C.diff. Awareness campaign was insight-based. We know that the health message alone does not work, and felt that making our message appearance-based, with personal participation it would make the educational facet more relevant to our audiences," states Nancy C Caralla, Executive Director. "Who doesn't like to enjoy Grandma's chocolate chip cookies? Sharing, caring, and bringing it face-to-face with a blend of history is the recipe of our success in promoting C. difficile infection prevention, treatments, environmental safety, and support worldwide."

About the C Diff Foundation:

The C Diff Foundation, a 501(c)(3) established 2012, is comprised of 100 percent volunteering professionals dedicated at supporting public health through education and advocating for C. difficile infection (CDI) prevention, treatments, environmental safety, and support worldwide.

The Foundress, Nancy C. Caralla, a Nurse diagnosed and treated for Clostridium difficile (C. diff.) infections and witnessing the loss of her father to C. difficile infection involvement, Nancy recognized the need for greater awareness through education, about research being conducted by the government, industry, and academia and better advocacy on behalf of patients, healthcare professionals, and researchers worldwide working to address the public health threat posed by this devastating, life-threatening infection.

California Safe Schools Honors 2017 Earth Day Heroes

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- In honor of Earth Day 2017, California Safe Schools celebrates all of the heroes who strive every day to protect our environment. This year, CSS is honoring the following 2017 Earth Day Heroes with awards and commendations for their exceptional efforts to protect human health and Mother Earth.

Founded by Robina Suwol in 1998, California Safe Schools (CSS) is a children's environmental health and environmental justice non-profit. CSS achieved national and international prominence by spearheading the Los Angeles Unified School District's (LAUSD) Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Policy, as has since been a leader in protecting children's environmental health.

2017 Earth Day Heroes:

Sandra Schubert, Esq. - Sacramento, California:

CSS celebrates Sandra for more than two decades of public service, beginning with helping to craft the LAUSD IPM Policy, followed by her work as a legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer of California, counsel to U.S. Senate Leader Harry Reid from Nevada, her role as the State of California Food & Agriculture Undersecretary, and all of her volunteer efforts working with California's groups which have led to greater protection for children's health and the environment.

Stephanie J. Harker & Cathy Blaivas - West Hollywood, California:

For their passionate community campaigns and tireless efforts to protect historic Plummer Park in West Hollywood, California Safe Schools celebrates Stephanie J. Harker and Cathy Blaivas co-founders of Protect Plummer Park. Their hard work prevented the destruction of 56 heritage trees and the demolition of nationally designated Great Hall/Long Hall, originally constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1937.

Douglas Anderson - Area Facilities Service Director, Los Angeles Unified School District, California:

CSS celebrates Douglas Anderson for his enormous efforts working with LAUSD's exceptional Maintenance & Operations staff, whose meticulous work ensures the successful implementation of LAUSD's groundbreaking IPM Policy in place for almost twenty years. LAUSD's IPM Policy is the most stringent pesticide policy in the nation for K-12 public schools and the first to embrace the "Precautionary Principle" and "Right to Know", and includes a 15-member oversight committee to ensure implementation. The success of the policy in the 2nd largest school district, which spans 740 square miles, 28 cities and more than 1000 sites, led to California's Healthy Schools Act of 2000. Today the LA Unified IPM policy serves as an international model for school districts' and communities' pesticide management programs.

On October 6, 2005, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed AB 405 (Montanez) sponsored by CSS, which strengthens The Healthy Schools Act. The bill bans experimental pesticides, whose health effects are unknown, from California K-12 public schools. As a result, more than six million California children and hundreds of thousands of school children are protected from experimental chemicals whose health effects are unknown.

"In honoring these outstanding, committed individuals, we are acknowledging the hard work and collaboration that has enabled us to protect not only current generations, but future generations to come," said Robina Suwol, founder and executive director of California Safe Schools.

Thirty-Seven U.S. State Proclamations Raise Awareness of Mysterious Childhood Deaths

CEDAR GROVE, N.J. /ScoopCloud/ -- The emotional trauma associated with losing a child is overwhelming. But when that loss is combined with a total lack of explanation, grief can become far more complicated, says the SUDC Foundation. Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) is the sudden unexplained death of a child over the age of one which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation is conducted.

It is not a diagnosis but a category of death that eludes our scientific understanding today. In 2015, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 393 children between the ages of 1 and 19 years died without a clear explanation for their death. The majority of SUDC deaths affect children aged 1-4 years.

"It is a frightening statistic, especially since SUDC often occurs in otherwise healthy children during sleep-time," explained Laura Crandall, co-founder and President of the SUDC Foundation, which is dedicated to increasing awareness, funding crucial research and the prevention of SUDC.

The Foundation is the only organization worldwide devoted solely to the needs of families and professionals affected by childhood sudden death.

When Devon and Georgia Boswell lost their precious son Drew on March 12, 2014, at the age of 15 months, they were devastated. "When we lost Drew, we felt all our dreams for the future slip through our fingers. How could our healthy 15 month-old, simply not wake up," a question Georgia Boswell still asks today.

Their friend, Christina Grantham, was also shocked by the inexplicable death of little Drew. She joined forces with the SUDC Foundation to improve the country's awareness of this little known tragedy. In 2016, she spearheaded the first nationwide awareness campaign in the U.S. to proclaim SUDC Awareness month to educate the public and raise funds for crucial research. Twenty-six U.S. states signed on.

"It has been an honor to work with Christina Grantham - a tireless volunteer in the fight to understand and prevent SUDC. Her dedication is not only a reflection of her love for Drew, but also her love for all children," states Lorri Caffrey, Co-founder of the SUDC Foundation.

In 2017, with the coordinated efforts of Christina and bereaved parents across the U.S., the campaign continues to grow. To date, thirty-seven (37) U.S. State Legislatures have issued proclamations that March 2017 is SUDC Awareness Month.

"Awareness is a catalyst that can allow the SUDC Foundation to reach more families and help achieve the end goal of a world without sudden unexplained death in childhood. As Drew's Mother, I could not be prouder that his short life and the passion of Christina Grantham, and so many others, have led to success of SUDC awareness month. This initiative is not just for Drew, it is for all SUDC children. Their legacies continue to bring out the best in people each and every day," says Georgia Boswell.

For more information and to view all of the SUDC US State proclamations visit the SUDC Foundation Website at: https://sudc.org/.

About the SUDC Foundation:

The SUDC Foundation is devoted solely to the needs of professionals and families touched by the unexpected death of a child aged 12 months or older. Since its inception, the non-profit Foundation has funded crucial research, helped hundreds of families in over 16 countries, and led many advocacy efforts, including the successful passage of the Sudden Unexpected Death Data Enhancement and Awareness Act, which was signed into law by President Obama in December 2014. Ferret Owners Hopeful as California Fish and Game Commission Consider Issuing Permits for Ferrets

LA MESA, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Legalize Ferrets, a California organization that continues to advocate for ferret legalization in the state, has a watchful eye on The California Fish and Game Commission this month. Why? The commission is set to consider issuing permits for ferrets during its April 26, 2017 meeting in Van Nuys, Calif.

Currently, ferrets are legal in 48 states - California and Hawaii are the exceptions. But ferret lovers are hopeful that California is ready to join the ranks.

"Previously, the commission rejected a proposal to remove ferrets from the prohibited species list," Pat Wright of LegalizeFerrets.org says. "It said doing so would remove ferrets from its jurisdiction and that ferrets could pose a threat to wildlife."

However, prior to 1985, the commission had issued permits for neutered male ferrets. So, ferret advocates countered the recent proposal rejection asking it to revisit its previous position. The commission agreed to study and hear the proposal.

California ferret lovers have submitted an open letter to the commission which highlights the commission's two objections and provides ferret advocate responses.

The commission's first objection that eliminating the ban would eliminate the commission's control is countered through a response suggesting that permitting would enable the commission to maintain their jurisdiction. Secondly, concerns over threats to wildlife are countered through letters submitted from all 50 states, and a few Canadian provinces, that report no instances of ferrets attacking or harming wildlife.

In fact, Wright shared that a ferret was recently confiscated in Arroyo Grande. It had gotten out and a neighbor turned it into local animal control.

"After a big deal and lots of tears the ferret was returned to the owner and she was given 30 days to get rid of it. This is just another example of the futility of the ferret ban," Wright says. "There's not a single documented case of feral ferrets in the United States. It's time that California ferret owners have protection from confiscations and possible euthanasia of their pets."

Real Help for a Milwaukee Public School

WASHINGTON, D.C. /ScoopCloud/ -- On March 28, 2017, the Treasurer of STEM-CAN Supporters (SCS) sent a $2,500 check to Fritz Blandon, Principal of Milwaukee Allen-Field Elementary School as a donation for the immediate purchase of Student Leadership Blazers and seven compound microscopes along with some minor supplies.

Principal Blandon had earlier described to SCS these prioritized needs and their estimated costs as being beyond his school budget. Since such beyond-school-budget supplies and projects are well within the mission of SCS, it was easy for SCS to be of prompt assistance. SCS is glad to give direct help to needy public schools for the direct benefit of their students; it is doubly pleased to get such thrilled reaction as received from Principal Blandon who was effusive in his letter of acceptance of the donation.

This original gift to Allen-Field Elementary represents exactly half of what SCS has budgeted for the school community. SCS is deeply convinced that it takes a community to produce the best possible Public School results; it takes a community to minimize absenteeism while maximizing school spirit and graduation rates of caring students.

Therefore, beyond these kinds of direct help to the school, SCS offers the matching amount of funding to help the school PTO or school community leaders to strengthen the local school community. Such school community funds will be used by the local volunteer leadership of parents, teachers, and other community leaders for enriching neighboring and deepening communication among the whole school community.

Other needy neighborhood public schools are invited to participate similarly in using similar funding by the STEM-CAN Supporters, a charitable educational corporation.

STEM-CAN Supporters initially budgets a get-acquainted $5,000 per applying needy neighborhood public school, with $2,500 dedicated to immediate classroom, project, program or school needs and a matching $2,500 for developing school community neighbor relationships.

These relationships are developed and supported primarily through "Our Community Hour" as described at https://stem-can.org/for-parents/.

STUDY: Linking Prevailing Wage Standards with Housing Reforms Would Close Affordability Gap and Save Taxpayer Dollars

SACRAMENTO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- A brand new study by construction industry research non-profit Smart Cities Prevail shows that linking prevailing wage standards with proposed reforms to streamline new housing development would close the affordability gap, save state and local governments tens of millions of dollars annually, and disproportionately benefit communities of color.

Read the study entitled "The Value of Linking Good Construction Jobs to California's Housing Reforms" here (PDF): http://www.smartcitiesprevail.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/24/2017/03/SCP_HousingReport.0314.pdf.

Overall, the study notes that it takes 13 percent more workers today to match the residential housing output that California enjoyed just twenty years ago. This steep decline in productivity has been matched by a 25 percent decline in inflation-adjusted blue-collar construction wages (the median wage is just $35,000 per year) and housing prices that have soared as high as 54 percent in the Bay Area.

"A productivity renaissance will be necessary to produce housing units in the numbers that will noticeably shave what Californians pay for housing," said study author Alex Lantsberg. "Studies have repeatedly shown that the best way to realize that goal is by incorporating prevailing wage standards."

Prevailing wage is a minimum wage for blue-collar construction work that reflects local market rates for different skilled crafts. Long associated with stronger economic outcomes and more local hiring, most research shows that prevailing wages have no significant impact on total project costs because they promote higher skilled craftsmanship.

This triggers increases in productivity and efficiency as high as 15 percent, reduced reliance on taxpayer funded public assistance programs, and prevents workforce shortages by helping to fund the apprenticeship programs that are used to meet California's construction workforce training needs.

Using industry standard economic impact analysis, the study notes that if California's multi-family residential construction industry resembled the rest of the construction industry on wage standards, it would:

* Increase incomes of blue-collar workers by more than $1 billion.
* Boost state and local tax revenues by at least $55 million.
* Save taxpayers at least $30 million on public assistance expenditures.

"Fully 40 percent of California's blue-collar construction workers now qualify for taxpayer subsidized housing and these workers are mostly people of color," Lantsberg added. "It's clear that failing to incorporate prevailing wages into reforms that streamline housing development will only exacerbate the affordability gap for the workers who build these units - particularly in high cost coastal communities."

With the Affordable Care Act facing an uncertain future, Lantsberg's analysis shows that 38 percent of full-time, blue-collar construction workers currently have no health care coverage and their Medicaid reliance is twice the national average for non-supervisory production workers.

According to Economic Census data, California's 2014 Affordable Housing Cost Study and other federal data sources, construction wages and benefits comprise just 15 percent of total residential housing costs-substantially less than contractor earnings and developer fees (18 percent), and less than half the cost share of equipment, materials, fuels and purchased services (34 percent).

Importantly, Lantsberg notes that neither labor costs nor materials have driven the increase in California's housing prices. Since 1992 the construction industry's gross operating surplus, or profits, have increased 50 percent more than either materials or construction labor.

"The suggestion that labor costs hinder the construction of more housing supply is simply not supported by the facts or the financial realities of the industry. With housing prices and profits soaring, the industry is well positioned to invest in productivity and affordability for its own workforce. We can make good progress towards both objectives by incorporating prevailing wage standards into a housing development streamlining package."

Alex Lantsberg, MCP, AICP is a Research Analyst with Smart Cities Prevail, a leading construction industry research and education organization. Alex holds a Masters of City Planning from the University of California, Berkeley and was admitted to the American Institute of City Planning in 2013. Lantsberg has co-authored numerous economic impact studies, including research analyzing the economic impact of prevailing wage laws in California and across the country, the public costs of wage and benefit restructuring and the economic impact of minimum wage.

It is an honor for any dance studio to have one piece make it through to the finals, but an absolutely amazing achievement that the NDT dancers will have the chance to compete with all three of the beautifully choreographed pieces! SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- April is Autism Awareness Month, celebrated worldwide. Geek Club Books, an autism nonprofit, is challenging the observance with their Autism Acceptance Ambassador Initiative. The initiative mobilizes parents and educators to actively get out and move the public from "awareness" to "acceptance and inclusion" in support of individuals on the autism spectrum in their communities.

Across the country, parents and teachers will be speaking to groups-their local schools, libraries, boy and girl scout meetings, and homeschool co-ops-telling their stories using Geek Club Books Autism EDU tools throughout the month of April. The tools were developed to capture and engage the public's attention, ignite their curiosities and inspire discussions.

"The Women's March demonstrated the power of women and families standing in solidarity for a cause," said Jodi Murphy, founder of Geek Club Books for Autism. "We need to be actively speaking out telling our personal stories to help people make a human connection to autism. Participants in our Acceptance Ambassador Initiative will create a positive impact in local communities that will lead to more caring and compassion for those with autism."

"We are going to educate others about autism because we don't want them to be afraid of it," said Charlotte, age 12 and her mother, Cate Luther. "Kids with autism are not so different. They just want to be loved and accepted like everyone else."

"Every person with autism is different and unique. I joined Geek Club Books Acceptance Ambassador Initiative to inspire change through teaching school professionals and parents how to best assist their children with autism."

SUDC Foundation Awards Grant to AAP and NAME to Establish National Guidelines for the Investigation of Sudden Deaths of Children

CEDAR GROVE, N.J. /ScoopCloud/ -- The SUDC Foundation, the only organization worldwide dedicated to sudden unexplained death in childhood (SUDC), has awarded nearly $100,000 to the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) to work collaboratively with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to investigate and establish national practice guidelines surrounding the investigations of sudden unexpected deaths in infants and young children, to determine research needs and the sensitive care of families affected.

The death of a child has profound effects on families and serious implications for our public health system particularly when the death is sudden and unexpected in an apparently healthy infant or child. While causes of these pediatric deaths are numerous and span natural disease, accidents and deaths due to abuse, many are not fully explained despite current efforts.

"No formal standards exist today that delineate the roles of those tasked with the death investigation of a child who dies suddenly, unexpectedly, and without an obvious cause," said Brian Peterson, MD, President of NAME. "We aim to change this by introducing evidence-based protocols that create uniformity and consistency in investigative procedures nationwide."

For the "Sudden Death in Pediatrics: Consensus for Investigation, Certification, Research Direction and Family Needs" project, NAME and AAP will work together to address these issues, leveraging their respective resources, expertise, and reputations. NAME and the AAP are also working collaboratively to revise the AAP policy statement, "Distinguishing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome."

"Although this task has been attempted by smaller groups in the past with limited success, we are confident that our strategic collaboration is set up for success because it is based on each organization's strong commitment to carry out a common mission," said Dr. Peterson of NAME.

"The death of an infant or child is devastating to all those involved. The SUDC Foundation is proud to support this amazing project that will help us better understand these tragedies, improve our surveillance of them, lead to prevention strategies and best support those most personally affected," said Laura Crandall, MA, President and Executive Director of the SUDC Foundation."
"As pediatricians who are dedicated to caring for children and preventing illness and injury, the death of any child is heartbreaking," said Vincent Palusci, MD, FAAP, member of the Executive Committee of the AAP Section on Child Abuse and Neglect. "Many pediatricians participate in community activities such as child death review to help understand the causes of sudden, unexpected deaths, and to identify ways to prevent them. The AAP is proud to be working with NAME to address these important issues and prevent further deaths."
The Sudden Death in Pediatrics project will commence this month to create an expert panel review of sudden and unexpected deaths in pre-pubescent children. This panel, identified by NAME and AAP, will be composed of professionals from various disciplines and settings representing the interests of death investigation, autopsy performance, certifications, genetic/metabolic testing, legal issues, and family needs. All panel members will be active in the practice of medicine in the field of sudden death in infants and children. Invitations to participate will also be issued to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2015, about 2800 infants and 400 children died without a clear cause being identified after investigation. Sudden Unexplained Infant Death/Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SUID/SIDS) and SUDC are age-based terms sometimes used to describe the sudden death of an infant or child which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation is conducted and other possible causes have been ruled out. They may also be categorized as "undetermined". SUID/SIDS are used to describe deaths less than 12 months of age, and SUDC used for deaths on or after a child's first birthday.
