BHERC To Cap-Off Their Monumental Season With 29th Annual S.E. Manly African American Short Film Showcase Closing Weekend

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) is pleased to announce the 29th Annual S. E. Manly African American Short Film Showcase (SEMAASFS) closing event, the weekend of January 19-21st, it will include 50 short films. BHERC is also hosting students to see the must-see film Origin, by talented and prolific filmmaker, Ava DuVernay, the first weekend of its release nationally. "We must go out and support our filmmakers and help make their films a success at the box office," noted BHERC President Sandra Evers-Manly.

The BHERC is also sponsoring a special Children's Film Block and "First Weekend Club Family Night", which also include supporting Ava DuVernay's must see film Origin, during its festival closing weekend. The festival was offered virtually on the BHERC streaming service www.BHERC.TV, from December 29th through January 12th. The short film showcase culminates with the in-person closing weekend event, taking place at the Regal at LA Live, 1000 W. Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90015.

With the success BHERC saw with both, "Sista's Are Doin' For Themselves" and "Reel Black Men" Short Film Showcases, 2023 was a landmark year for the organization. BHERC's Youth Diversity Film Festival, also experienced an unprecedented number of submissions and global inclusion. Each festival and showcase in 2023, showed exponential growth, excitement, and notoriety; with "Sista's" being mentioned in an LA Times Article. Some of Hollywood's brightest stars: Gina Prince-Bythewood, Kari Lemmons, Princess Monique, and Numa Perrier, made a point to mention BHERC and its "Sista's" Short Film Showcase, as a major milestone and resource in their careers. The train did not stop there.

The Reel Black Men Short Film Showcase received high praise and special appearances from distinguished filmmakers Michael Schultz and David Massey, a special appearance by rising talented filmmaker Juel Taylor, and the showcase was even allowed to feature Ryan Coogler's short film "Locks" as a special showing at the festival. BHERC hopes to continue their upward momentum by using the 29th annual SEMAASFS, to usher in a new and even more successful year in 2024.

Special Event Highlights

Student Screening and Dialogue of Origin: BHERC will host 1,100 High School and College Students from across Southern California to see Ava DuVernay's groundbreaking and powerful film Origin.

First Weekend Club Family Night: BHERC will again hold its opening night ceremony, with its First Weekend Club Family Night, where members, attendees and special guests will also watch, visionary filmmaker Ava DuVernay's powerful film "Origin". Ava DuVernay is one of the best Hollywood has to offer, and her new film "Origin," is yet another example of her genius.

Weekend Highlights

Children's Film Block: This film block featuring films curated for children ages 10 and up. Films will feature the genres of animation, history, drama and more.

Short Film Showcase: Selected from over 500 entries, the 29th short film showcase films offer a variety of perspectives from around the world. They represent genres and subject matter that include historically based events, romance, drama, sci-fi, horror, documentaries, animation, and comedy to name a few.

Las Positas College Students Launch Financial Literacy Nonprofit

California Safe Schools Celebrates its 25th Anniversary Honoring Environmental Health Heroes!

DISTINGUISHED 2023 HONOREES

Lowell Anger, joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office in January 1995 and has been a Head Deputy District Attorney of the Environmental Crimes Division and the Organized Crime and Hate Crimes Division. He received the 2016 Project LEAD Award for the outstanding teacher in the District Attorney's program that works with at-risk fifth graders. Throughout his career, Lowell has been a frequent guest lecturer in schools throughout Los Angeles County.

Enrique Baeza, Branch Chief Peace Officer, California Department of Toxic Substances, Office of Criminal Investigation. Enrique is one of the first in the nation to create an Environmental Justice unit within a Law Enforcement office and has also been recognized for outstanding performance in the investigation and prosecution of a polluter in the highest traditions of the US Department of Justice.

Maria Dolores R. Dalusong has worked for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Environmental Health Division for 20 years and is now Chief of the Vectorborne Disease Surveillance Program. She also serves on the Los Angeles Unified Integrated Pest Management Committee to protect children and all school stakeholders from pesticide exposure.

Mui Koltunov, Ph.D., Research Scientist Supervisor II, Branch Chief of the Environmental Chemistry Laboratory in Pasadena for the Department of Toxic Substances Control. Dr. Koltunov and her team established the Toxic Crusaders Program to work specifically with K-12 students and teachers to learn about toxic chemicals in consumer products and the environment.

Pete Treebumrung, Combines analytics and technology into visual map layers that provide a simple but transformative understanding of data to enable clear communication and focus problem-solving. Projects he has completed include, "Asthma Alley, CA", "The Diesel Death Zone of Los Angeles" and "The Poverty-Pollution Loop".

Los Angeles 10th District PTSA Children are the main focus of everything the PTA does with Informed parental involvement in the schools being essential to effective educational programs. Issues on their agenda: gun control, drug abuse, vaping, homelessness, teenage suicide, cultural diversity and belonging and social media impacts.

Los Angeles 31st District PTSA The 31st District PTSA serves 6 councils and over 110 PTA/PTSA units in the San Fernando Valley, Sunland and Tujunga area. Their areas of focus are: student and school success, health and safety, arts and culture, and advocacy.

Lowell Chamber Orchestra Receives Three-Year Funding for Advancement Of BIPOC Composers

LOWELL, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Lowell Chamber Orchestra (LCO) has been inducted into the Barr Foundation's "Creative Vitality Grant Program," in order to continue its mission of providing the greater Lowell area with the most diverse classical music.

Barr's new Creative Vitality grant program builds on the Foundation's racial equity work to date and their commitment to centering BIPOC artists, organizations, and communities in their program strategies. Creative Vitality is an opportunity to expand the understanding and support of the BIPOC arts ecosystem more broadly by supporting arts organizations.

The Lowell Chamber Orchestra will receive funding over three years to expand the understanding and appreciation of BIPOC composers in classical music.

"The Lowell Chamber Orchestra will use this grant to further include the work of BIPOC artists," says LCO's Music Director Orlando Cela. "After we got the news, I decided to revisit the remainder of the season and include a work by South African composer Bongani Ndodana-Breen in our upcoming December concert, and the Symphony for Violas and Basses by the little-known but consequential African-American composer Julia Perry in our February performance."

The orchestra also plans to present educational events that will introduce the contributions of BIPOC composers such as Florence Price, William Grant Still, George Lewis, and many others, to classical music.

Reimagining Wellness: At Charles E. Smith Life Communities The Age-Old House Calls Are An Innovative Approach To Healthcare

Dr. Gil-Pires' interest in helping seniors started when she was 15, growing up in Connecticut, attending high school next door to a nursing home. "I developed my passion for making a difference in the lives of seniors, and I wanted to pursue a career that would help me support that dream."

In her present role, Gil-Pires oversees all clinical and administrative aspects of the senior living community's medical services. Move For Hunger sets the new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for Most Cereal Boxes Toppled in a Domino Fashion

Gains and Challenges Seen in New Study of U.S. Postdoc Programs

ROCKVILLE, Md. /ScoopCloud/ -- A new report released today from the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) published in partnership with Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, highlights both progress over the last decade in institutional support for postdoctoral fellows ("postdocs") as well as significant areas requiring attention. The report, Pressing Forward in Supporting Postdocs: 2023 National Postdoctoral Association Institutional Policy Report, makes specific recommendations to institutions hosting the nation's 72,000 postdocs.

"The NPA Institutional Policy Report is invaluable in showing how far we have come in supporting postdoctoral scholars, in helping us dig deeper into the issues that impact scholars and our offices, and in advocating for greater support for the scholars that are working hard to change the world," commented Sofie R. Kleppner, Ph.D., associate vice provost and associate dean, Stanford University.

The new release provides four critical recommendations for improving the postdoctoral environment: pay postdocs a competitive wage with comprehensive benefits; provide proper institutional support for postdoc offices and associations; collect data on postdoc demographics and outcomes; and provide a postdoc handbook transparently outlining institutional policies.

"This report provides clear direction for any institution with a postdoc program," commented Thomas P. Kimbis, J.D., executive director and chief executive officer of the NPA. "The data tell a tale of hard work and major successes in some areas- and the need to redouble efforts in others."

With data collected from more than 100 institutions, the NPA looked at key factors of postdoctoral programs, including policies, benefits, and training programs. With longitudinal data covering a span of nine years, originating with the first such report in 2014, this report provides a unique data set identifying specific areas of strength and weakness aggregated across U.S. postdoctoral policies and practices.

For the first time, the survey also collected information on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts at institutions, with support from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. In regard to the total number of postdocs in the U.S., the data did not show any indication of a decrease over the last three years, although there has been a decline when looking across the last decade.

"This data gives us critical insight into key areas of need when it comes to institutional support and fair pay for postdoctoral scholars," said Jamie Vernon, Sigma Xi executive director and chief executive officer. "The inclusion of DEI information in this year's report represents a key area of importance for both Sigma Xi and the NPA and can produce a valuable barometer for institutions."

The report is tied to the NPA Recommendations for Postdoc Policies and Practices, which provides comprehensive guidelines for institutions hosting postdocs. A new version of the recommendations is scheduled to be released in 2024, providing additional direction to institutions seeking to improve their postdoctoral environments.

Pressing Forward in Supporting Postdocs is being released in conjunction with the September/October issue of Sigma Xi's publication, American Scientist, and is also available online at the Sigma Xi and NPA websites. Silicon Valley High School Senior Works to Improve Cystic Fibrosis Research through AI

New Class of NPA IMPACT Fellows Announced: Six outstanding postdocs hailing from underrepresented communities form third IMPACT class

This year's selectees are early-career professionals in fields ranging from molecular biology and neuroscience to chemical engineering and education.

Fellows begin today on a 16-month program that allows them to recognize and build upon their own strengths, learn from their peers, network with experts, connect with IMPACT alums who have already completed the program, and gain additional mentors, allowing them to advance confidently in their careers. IMPACT Fellows also use the knowledge, tools and resources they gain from the program to implement innovative activities or initiatives at their institutions that amplify the impact of the fellowship as they contribute back to home communities.

Sacramento SPCA Performs 300,000th Spay and Neuter Surgery

SACRAMENTO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Sacramento SPCA announced today that they hit a spay and neuter surgery milestone - altering the 300,000th animal in Sacramento since 2007. That's an average of nearly 19,000 animals a year - making the Sacramento SPCA one of the top clinics in the nation.

The 300,000th animal to receive surgery at the Sacramento SPCA was "Mama Goose" - a feral cat who had given birth and raised kittens in a yard in Sacramento. She was trapped and brought to the Zoe K. McCrea Animal Health Center at the Sacramento SPCA through the weekday Community Cat Clinic. Thanks to the Feline Spay and Neuter Fund, she was spayed at no cost to her trapper, and returned home.

The Sacramento SPCA serves the Sacramento region and beyond as a premier provider of low-cost spay and neuter services, collaborating with local rescue groups, feral and community cat caregivers, those in need, and the public to alter 20,000 animals annually.

The Zoe K. McCrea Animal Health Center dedicates every Sunday to the health and welfare of community cats, providing free surgeries to more than 70 cats in Sacramento County each week. The shelter also offers 10 surgical slots for Sacramento County cats Monday through Saturday at no cost, thanks the Sacramento SPCA's Feline Spay and Neuter Fund. In collaboration with and funded by Zoe K. McCrea, Kathy Lelevier & Richard Rose, Dr. Nancy T. Field, and Mary & Kevin Clark, this initiative was launched in August of 2022 to provide more spay/neuter surgery appointments for community cats outside of the Sunday clinics.

Once serving as a travel and trade route for indigenous peoples, then later by a subsidiary of the Central Pacific Railroad, the Sacramento River Rail Trail and Sacramento River Trail provide opportunities for the community to be active, access the outdoors, and connect to neighborhoods and destinations in and around the City of Redding, including the Shasta Lake Recreation Area and the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. The trails also serve as a backbone for a developing regional trail system that encompasses more than 250 miles and will eventually stretch from the Shasta Dam to Redding's southern neighbor, Anderson, and beyond.

The bridge, park and Redding's vast network of trails-built in phases over the past three decades - have helped transform the region. The vast regional system of trails is a product of a partnership managed by the City of Redding, the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service with the support of local groups, foundations, other agencies and community members.

The trail pair was among three nominees voted on by the public between Jul. 31 and Aug. 7, 2023, securing nearly 48% of the vote. The Sacramento River Rail Trail and Trail duo is the 37th inductee in RTC's Hall of Fame, joining an exemplary list of trails recognized for their outstanding scenic value, use, amenities, historical significance and community benefit. More than 30,000 votes were cast in the 2023 Hall of Fame contest. Senior Dogs at Sacramento SPCA Fetch Grant
