California Safe Schools Celebrates 26th Anniversary – Honors Environmental Legend Ed Begley Jr. and Heroes of All Ages!

Give A Hand Announces Relief Effort for Victims of 2024 Kenya Floods

300,000 Are Homeless, Hungry: The 'Right' Time to Help is Right Now

FRESNO, Calif., Oct. 8, 2024 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) –– In the wake of destructive flooding in Kenya and parts of Tanzania, East Africa this spring, nonprofit organization Give A Hand has issued a call for an intensive relief effort to aid impacted families. Give A Hand executives said that while a minimal amount of aid is trickling through, hundreds of thousands of flood victims remain in need.

“Raising awareness is our goal,” said Dr. Nelson Pichardo, Executive Director of Give A Hand. “The press isn’t really covering this. Nobody knows what’s going on and how many parents and their children are still homeless and starving in Kenya.”

The floods that rocked Kenya and toppled traditionally-built homes began in April and have resulted in nearly 315 deaths, at least 188 people injured, 38 still missing and nearly 300,000 homeless, according to United Nations OCHA.

“Many of these families are single-parent households: a mother and her children,” Pichardo pointed out. “They were already struggling before the flooding. These floods literally wiped houses out. Now these families have no place to go, and with a recent cholera outbreak, they need not just food and shelter but medical supplies. There’s a serious need.”

While the United Nations has allocated funds to aid the victims, “It’s not enough,” noted Pichardo. “These people have lost everything.”

MASSIVE RELIEF EFFORT IS UNDERWAY: “WE WANTED TO GIVE BACK”

Since its initial relief efforts through its portal giveahand.site, where donors are able to pledge aid, Give A Hand has raised approximately $24,000, executives noted.

“We have huge construction trucks going into the area because nothing else can get in,” Pichardo noted. The area remains impassable by other modes of transportation, he said, and families are stranded. “People don’t know where to go.”

NJ Coalition Fights Destructive Impact of Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind South Project

Save LBI Notifies Federal Agencies of Intent to Sue Over Breach of Endangered Species Act and Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act

BEACH HAVEN, N.J., Oct. 8, 2024 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Save Long Beach Island (Save LBI), a New Jersey citizens group working to protect the ocean and local shore communities from the destructive impact of the Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind South project, has notified federal agencies of its intent to sue Atlantic Shores under the Endangered Species Act and Outer Continental Shelf Act (OCSLA).

The notices give the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 60 days to resolve issues raised in the filings before the coalition pursues litigation. BOEM oversees offshore wind development in the United States and NOAA manages the use of our marine resources.

Save LBI contends that constructing and operating hundreds of wind turbines directly in a prime migration path of the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale could push these mammals into extinction. The population of the right whale is down to approximately 338, with fewer than 70 reproductively active females, according to NOAA estimates.

“Underwater noise from the massive, diesel-powered hammers that will be used to ‘pile drive’ 50-foot-wide turbine foundations into the seabed as well as from vessel surveys and the operation of those turbines will obstruct the essential migration of the right whale as it attempts to pass through those waters, jeopardizing the whale’s existence while violating the Endangered Species Act,” said Bob Stern, president and co-founder of Save LBI.

Save LBI further maintains that BOEM and NOAA have, without sound justification, dismissed the significant problem of operational noise from the larger and noisier turbines Atlantic Shores plans to build off the coast of New Jersey. “The agencies routinely cite lower noise levels from smaller turbines to avoid addressing the problem of higher noise levels from larger turbines,” Stern said.

With respect to the Endangered Species Act, the agencies have also failed to consider, let alone study, the impact all wind-turbine projects along the East Coast would have on the right whale’s migration.

“And this is just one of many problems that will be created by the Atlantic Shores South wind project, which, shockingly, has already received federal approval,” Stern added.

Safeguarding the Natural Environment, Fishing, and National Security Under OCSLA

Save LBI asserts that BOEM and NOAA did not adequately account for how the Atlantic Shores offshore wind farm will interfere with other uses of the ocean — particularly vessel navigation, fishing, including the New Jersey surf clam industry, and national defense — as required by OCSLA, which gives the federal government the authority to lease areas of the ocean.

Save LBI further contends that the federal agencies acted in an arbitrary manner when they approved the placement of hundreds of wind turbines weighing hundreds of thousands of tons in the ocean with no plan or capability, technically or monetarily, to remove them at the end of their useful life or upon their failure during normal operation or in the aftermath of a hurricane or extreme storm event.

BOEM and NOAA have also failed to account for structural failures, such as the Vineyard Wind turbine blade that spontaneously collapsed off the coast of Nantucket Island in July, the damage from such failures to the ocean and beaches, how that damage will be remediated, and who will pay for it.

Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind Project Overview

The Atlantic Shores South project and planned Atlantic Shores North project, would industrialize the New Jersey coastline between Atlantic City and Barnegat Light with the installation of the 357 wind turbines, each three times the height of the Statue of Liberty. The greater New Jersey/New York offshore wind plan embraced by the federal government could ultimately include more than 2,000 wind turbines.

This project area, selected many years ago with no public consideration of wind turbine impact, would place the largest turbines available less than 9 miles off a beautiful 18-mile barrier island beach, closer than any other wind project in the world and in a primary migration path of a critically endangered whale. The project would:

Jeopardize that whale’s existence due to the project’s high levels of underwater noise.
Destroy the shore experience with highly visible turbines and disturbing blade rotation, airborne noise, reduced breeze, and higher air temperature and humidity.
Degrade the nearby Brigantine National Wilderness Area from construction air pollutants.
Have a severe economic impact on tourism, jobs, rentals, property value, and tax revenues.
Dramatically increase electric bills to every user in New Jersey, placing an additional financial burden on households and businesses.
Require new infrastructure and substantial long-term funding for turbine removal.
Remove key fishing grounds.
Impair defense air radars in Gibbsboro, NJ.
Have only a “negligible” effect on climate change, according to the official impact statement. Because climate change is caused by global heat transfer that is already underway, this project would only delay future sea level rise for a matter of days, not stop or even reduce it.

“It should be obvious to any objective decision-maker that siting a huge offshore wind project that brings this extraordinary degree of short and long-term environmental and social damage, with no clear project purpose to justify that, is a big mistake,” Stern concluded. “Decision-makers should acknowledge the significant new information that has come forward since this area was selected, recognize the strength of the legal challenges ahead, and change course to save everyone on both sides of this issue a lot of time, work, and money.”

Save LBI Legal Challenges at a Glance

Save LBI is pursuing a series of legal actions against the Atlantic Shores South project. One case regarding wind companies vessel surveys and recent whale deaths is already in court, and the organization recently filed suit against Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind, declaring the project will violate local noise ordinances and nuisance criteria. Save LBI will be fighting in court to:

Protect marine mammals, including critically endangered whales, under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Dispute the project’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and the entire governmental review process under the National Environmental Policy Act; that review process has not allowed for the consideration of meaningful alternatives, which should be the “heart of any EIS.
Prevent excessive electric bill increases under the New Jersey’s Offshore Wind Energy Development Act by challenging the flawed cost-benefit analysis on which the NJ Board of Public Utilities pending award is based.
Safeguard vessel navigation, fishing, and national defense uses of the ocean under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act.
Protect the NJ Coastal Zone under the Coastal Zone Management Act.
Protect the Brigantine National Wilderness Area from air quality degradation.

Grey Muzzle Grant Gives Senior Dogs at The Sacramento SPCA a Second Chance

NPA Announces New Cohort of IMPACT Fellows: Six remarkable postdocs hailing from underrepresented communities form fourth IMPACT class

BETHESDA, Md. /ScoopCloud/ -- The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) today announced the members of its fourth class of scholars in its signature program designed to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the postdoctoral community and beyond. This year's selectees are early-career professionals in fields ranging from evolutionary biology and mechanical engineering to climate science and organizational leadership.

Fellows begin this month with a 16-month program that allows them to recognize and build upon their strengths, learn from their peers, network with experts, connect with IMPACT alums who have already completed the program, and gain additional mentors, allowing them to advance confidently in their careers. IMPACT Fellows also use the knowledge, tools, and resources they gain from the program to implement innovative activities or initiatives at their institutions that amplify the impact of the fellowship as they contribute back to home communities.

As a result, more than 6 million California school children and hundreds of thousands of teachers and school employees are protected from experimental chemicals.

National Nonprofit Petco Love Invests in Sacramento SPCA to Save and Improve the Lives of Pets in the Sacramento Region

Elyse, who will be attending Harding University in Arkansas this fall, overcame childhood shyness when she began debate as a required course in high school. "I discovered [debate] was something I really loved. I loved being able to research and then to communicate my ideas to others," she said.

The top two finalists from each of the regional events earn a place in the National Championship where they receive an all-expense paid trip to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, CA as well as earning their share of $50,000 in scholarships.

The Great Communicator Debate Series (GCDS) is currently on its National tour with six in-person regional competitions and two online events with the finals hosted in Simi Valley, CA.

"The program is designed to showcase the debate and influence skills of high school students across the country," reported Megan Gately, Director of Learning & Engagement at the Reagan Foundation. Brazilian Gangsta Rapper, Once an Addict and Drug Dealer, Now Uses His Music and Passion to Reach Kids With the Truth About Drugs

CUIABA, Brazil /ScoopCloud/ -- Growing up surrounded by gangs, crime, and violence that plagued his neighborhood in Cuiabá, Brazil, in the '80s and '90s, Diogenes Luiz de Oliveira tried to escape from that life by using and trafficking drugs. Now, he uses his own story and the drug education materials of Foundation for a Drug-Free World to help keep kids out of the trap that consumed and nearly destroyed his life.

Oliveira and his brother were raised by a single mother. While she always put food on the table, childhood was a meager affair. "I remember going through the garbage in the richest neighborhoods to look for toys for my brother and me," he says.

He began using marijuana at 14. Then his uncle introduced him to cocaine. He would come home at dawn after a weekend of nonstop alcohol and cocaine abuse, and his mother would be waiting up for him. She tried to get through to him about what he was doing with his life. But to no avail.

At first, he confined himself to selling marijuana, but he soon graduated to trafficking cocaine and crack. And because he was selling, he always had access to drugs. He started out using cocaine twice a week, but it rapidly accelerated to a constant activity.

Oliveira began singing gangsta rap. "The songs I wrote spoke about my daily life on the streets and the violence on the outskirts of the city," he says. "I extolled crime and gangs in the lyrics and cursed the police." He and his group began opening major shows. It was a dream come true. With fame came increased police scrutiny, and in 2003, he was arrested and served time for drug trafficking and theft. But if prison was supposed to teach him a lesson, it failed. It was there that he began using crack.

"When I got out of prison, addicted to crack, with no future, and with only the streets to shelter me, I plunged headlong into the wrong things," he says.

As fate would have it, his mother had remarried, and her husband was a police officer. When she finally convinced him to go into rehab, it was her husband, a cop, who paid for it.

"It was the best decision I ever made," he says. "Life teaches you in surprising ways. I learned there are good cops and bad cops."

Olveira still raps. But his songs now focus on staying clean. He uses his music to speak his truth: that crime and drugs are not the way to solve the problems in life. He began visiting schools to share his story and to help kids make the decision to live drug-free.

In 2018, he teamed up with Mundo Sem Drogas, the Brazilian chapter of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, and has used its Truth About Drugs booklets and videos to educate some 40,000 local children.

"My dream is to continue rapping and bringing my story to schools to reach them with the truth about drugs," he says.

Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free. Through the support of Scientology Churches and Scientologists, the Foundation offers its drug education resources free of charge to anyone wishing to use them to educate others about drugs. The program is inspired by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, who noted the role substance abuse plays in the disintegration of the social fabric. National Postdoctoral Association Announces Free Membership for HBCU Students

"We want to do our small part at pushing back against the tide that has historically disadvantaged certain Black students from attaining their desired jobs through first obtaining postdoc positions."

Data show that Black researchers are underrepresented in postdoctoral and university faculty positions. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, "6 percent of faculty were Black, specifically 4 percent Black female and 3 percent Black male" in 2021. Meanwhile, the U.S. Census Bureau finds that Black students make up 15.7 percent of all enrollments in higher education during the same time period, creating a significant disconnect between student and faculty positions.

According to a White House initiative, "HBCUs offer all students, regardless of race, an opportunity to develop their skills and talents. These institutions train young people who go on to serve domestically and internationally in the professions as entrepreneurs and in the public and private sectors."

"Building an inclusive community of support is foundational to the mission and the vision of NPA," said NPA chair of the board of directors, Caleb C. McKinney. Starting immediately, the NPA will offer free access to all of its resources to individuals at HBCU institutions to broaden understanding in the Black community of the pathways opened through postdoc positions.

The other 2024 Catalyst winner is Sgt. Danny Pacheco Jr., who founded Delray Kicks, a soccer program that works with mainly immigrant children, who are often wary of law enforcement. As an immigrant from Peru, Pacheco Jr. understood the children's experiences and strove to create a program that has helped build relationships, taught citizenship, and brought positive change to the lives of the kids they serve, making Delray Beach a better community for everyone.

"There is no application for the Catalyst Award," explained Perlman. "The work these recipients do speaks so loudly, that it cannot help but be noticed."

The Carl Angus DeSantis Foundation also awards grants through an application process and these recipients were also recognized at the luncheon with presentations about each organization's mission, which will be accelerated by the Foundation's grant.
