Healthy Mobile Markets Launch in Broward County

DANIA BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- The City of Dania Beach Community Redevelopment Agency is proud to announce that the Dania Beach People's Access To Community Horticulture (PATCH) is preparing to launch five Mobile Market sites around Broward County. Known as a community market and garden, the Dania Beach PATCH is a resource for locally grown food. Now, the PATCH is extending healthy food options to neighboring cities in Broward County through the use of mobile markets.

The Mobile Markets are a component of the FARMERS MARKET AND LOCAL FOOD PROMOTION PROGRAM (FMLFPP) Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that was awarded to Dania Beach in October 2017.

A launch party is scheduled for December 13, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dania Beach PATCH. The guest list includes officials from participating municipalities, stakeholders, supporters and customers. Food Education demonstrations featuring Chef Chad Cherry from Refresh Live will be part of the launch and will offer Chef Demonstrations at the Pilot Mobile Markets.

The Mobile Market Pilot program will begin in January 2019. A permanent schedule will begin in February 2019. The mobile markets will serve the Broward Municipal Services District (BMSD); Fort Lauderdale, Hallandale Beach, and North Lauderdale. These sites are part of a pilot program to determine the best locations for permanent mobile markets designed to achieve the goals of providing affordable, locally grown produce to all in Broward County.

A partnership with FRESH ACCESS BUCKS through FEEDING FLORIDA, will provide incentives on Florida grown produce to EBT/SNAP participants. Another facet of the program is to connect small growers to markets to promote, strengthen, and build local grower's production and distribution.

RMA Proposed Innovation District Wins Major Award for Pompano Beach CRA

These marketing tools are now being used by the City, CRA, and by the Chamber of Commerce to attract new commercial businesses and developers, retain the existing industrial base, and continue to improve the neighborhood and quality of life of the residents, making the City, and in particular the Downtown, a more attractive place to live, work, invest and visit.

Future development in the Innovation District could include 750,000 square feet of office space, 166,000 square feet of retail space, 35,000 square feet of restaurant space, 1,500 residential units and two hotels. Job creation and other benefits will spill into the surrounding neighborhood and throughout the city.

Central to the success of the Innovation District is its unique approach to a new system of self-contained, linear waterways, which will create a scenic setting for outdoor restaurants, offices, shops and mixed-use buildings. Inspired by the waterway systems in Amsterdam, Netherlands and San Antonio, Texas, these waterways eliminate the need for dry retention ponds, allowing developers to maximize buildout across the parcels while creating an inviting and activated urban area that benefits the entire city.

XG Communities announces advancement for the City of La Puente’s small cell and 5G wireless strategy

The City of Fresno and XG Communities announce 100 site small cell 4.9G / 5G deployment

FRESNO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Today, XG Communities, LLC announced the first of over 100 new 4.9G/5G small cell sites utilizing city-owned infrastructure in the City of Fresno. The network, which is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2018, will cover over half of the City with the latest wireless technology. New Study Strengthens Evidence that Fluoride Safely Prevents Tooth Decay, But Critics Ignore the Study They Once Welcomed

WASHINGTON, D.C. /ScoopCloud/ -- A study led by researchers at the federal government's National Toxicology Program (NTP) has found no link between elevated levels of fluoride and cognitive/learning deficits. The American Fluoridation Society (AFS) reports that the recently released NTP study examined rats that consumed food and water with varying exposures of fluoride. The researchers "observed no exposure-related differences in motor, sensory, or learning and memory performance" for any of the nine tests they conducted.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognizes the benefits of adding fluoride to toothpaste and drinking water. The CDC and many leading health experts recommend adding fluoride to drinking water to help prevent tooth decay. Most public water systems in the U.S. add more fluoride to reach the level proven to reduce the rate of tooth decay for children and adults.

When the NTP study was first announced, an anti-fluoride group welcomed the news with a headline declaring that the study's findings "could end fluoridation." This group cited the NTP's "cutting edge scientific tools" and wrote that the NTP's decision to conduct a study "puts a lie to [proponents'] claims" about fluoridation. The American Fluoridation Society (AFS) noted that critics have been quiet since the NTP study results were publicly released.

"Critics of community water fluoridation were thrilled when the NTP said they would conduct a thorough study of this issue," said AFS President Johnny Johnson. "However, they have been as quiet as a church mouse since the NTP's findings were made public. Once again, they choose to ignore the studies that don't fit into their fear-based mindset. They're choosing silence over science."

The NTP research studied rats during their prenatal development through their adulthood. These rats consumed water with three different concentrations of fluoride (0, 10 and 20 ppm) and two different fluoride levels in food: 20.5 ppm (a standard diet) and 3.24 ppm (low-fluoride diet). Although fluoride critics often claim that fluoridation is harmful to the thyroid, the NTP study revealed that thyroid hormone levels were not altered by exposure to levels as high as 10 or 20 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride.

The only side effect found by the NTP study was inflammation of the prostate gland, which was observed only at a fluoride exposure that was far above the level of human exposure by drinking fluoridating water.

In addition to the NTP study, research published in 2015 by the American Journal of Public Health found no link at all between fluoridation and IQ scores. This 2015 study was conducted in New Zealand, where fluoridation programs are common. The New Zealand study examined a large sample of people and examined IQ scores collected over a 31-year period.

Few public health topics have been researched as thoroughly as CWF. In fact, the database maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine contains more than 56,000 studies or research papers on fluoride. And the Library's records include more than 6,400 studies that focus specifically on fluoridation.

Two other recent reports reinforce the safety of fluoridated water. In a report issued this March, Public Health England reviewed the evidence surrounding fluoridation and reached this conclusion: "The findings of this report agree with the view that water fluoridation is an effective and safe public health measure to reduce the frequency and severity of dental decay, and narrow differences in dental health between more and less deprived children and young people."

In April, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued a report stating that "there is currently no scientific basis for concerns about the safety of children and adults" due to fluoride exposure from foods and drinks.

"One example is in the food and grocery industry where the rapid advancement of online ordering and delivery will change the footprint of stores nationwide, creating potentially smaller front-of-house retail spaces and larger expanses for storage."

Briesemeister also noted that the rapidly increasing percentage of people who purchase groceries online will necessitate centralized urban distribution centers, as rural centers will be unable to meet timely delivery demands. However, current zoning does not typically allow for distribution centers in downtowns, and therefore may need to be adjusted. Another adjustment will be modifications in drop off, pick up and delivery zones near urban stores which will be impacted by cars becoming autonomous.

"Changes in zoning laws will be required to meet the shift in how we buy goods," said Briesemeister.

An additional development that city leaders also need to be ready for is the advent of smart buildings. In the Netherlands, a new concept was introduced that far surpassed the basic LEED certified conditions. In one case, a building was outfitted with 32,000 sensors that constantly monitor everything, including which rooms are the dirtiest so cleaning crews know where to concentrate their time.

"These smart buildings will increase efficiency at many levels, and city leaders need to be aware of that impact," explained Briesemeister. "From changes in permitting laws to timing the flow of Uber pickups and coordinating traffic controls, technology is going to have an even greater effect on our daily lives. These advances will be implemented by the business community quickly, so futuristic city planning must be happening now."

"There has been a lot of misinformation and misinterpretation of the past, which I feel has led to a slave mentality that still pervasive today. I call it 'post traumatic slave disorder.' But if you take the time to explore history and connect to the past, I feel it will remove that mentality."

Adenle though his work, also imagines Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcom X speaking together. While this never happened, Adenle uses the image to express the different approaches to a similar goal.

"Art is an amazing way to present topics for discussion. We connect through art and we can heal from it as well," Adenle said.

Adenle's paintings and drawings connect his background to observations intermingled with primary emotions and personal experiences that are basic to his growth, especially as they continue to influence socio-political discourse in his homeland (Nigeria) and intertwined with policies in his adoptive country, the US. He is the author of "Mixed Feelings," a 15-year celebration/collection of his socio-political satire. City of La Mesa offers Official Proclamation in Support of Ferret Legalization for California

LA MESA, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Mayor Mark Arapostathis and all members of the La Mesa City Council issued a proclamation on November 9 urging the California State Legislature to pass ferret legalization legislation, non-profit Legalize Ferrets announced today.

The original request was for La Mesa to declare itself a ferret sanctuary city. The idea drew support, but many people objected to the term "sanctuary." The request was made to declare La Mesa a "ferret friendly city."

Ferret owners were aided at first by city councilwoman Kristine Alessio who has had experience with Savannah cat legalization issues and knew what ferret owners are facing in a hostile Fish and Game Commission and apathetic California legislature.

"We were also aided by city councilman Bill Baber who sympathized with us for facing another useless and outdated law backed up by an out of touch state agency," said Pat Wright of Legalize Ferrets.

Mayor Mark Arapostathis was an outstanding ally of the ferrets and recommended a proclamation.

Wright added, "We are also grateful to City Councilmen Guy McWhiter and Colin Parent who agreed with the absurdity and cruelty of California's anti-ferret law and signed on to the proclamation."

California ferret lovers continue to be rejected or ignored by California legislators but are achieving support from cities around California. Culver City has already put the ferret issue on their city council agenda and ferret lovers are next set to ask the Encinitas city council.

Now that we have this proclamation we are set to ask cities around California to adopt the ferret friendly resolution.

The Ocean Avenue Bridge in Boynton Beach was a tale of two cities. This whimsical structure connects the City of Boynton Beach and the Town of Ocean Ridge, two very diverse coastal communities. The 21' structure replaced a dated and substandard bridge crossing the Intracoastal Waterway. Native sea life provides the artistic palette for the bridge's metal trellis work which serves as the base for spire-like towers emerging from the bascule piers. Separate pedestrian and bicycle access is provided along with illuminated waterfront communal space under the bridge. The bridge served as an integral piece of Boynton Beach's downtown revitalization.

The Flagler Memorial Bridge, much like the Ocean Avenue Bridge, is the connecting point for the City of West Palm Beach and the Town of Palm Beach, two distinctly different South Florida communities. The bascule bridge serves as the replacement for a 1938 structure and spans 2,400 feet over the Intracoastal Waterway. CSA as a sub consultant to KHA provided services to FDOT for a PD&E study and met with the community to determine location of new bridge, height and the architectural style of the bridge. The team then developed a criteria package for a design build project delivery and assisted FDOT with the selection of the design build team and provided plan review of documents for compliance with the RFP.

The Crosstown Parkway Bridge in Port St. Lucie is the largest and most industrial of the Currie Sowards Aguila bridge designs, and includes an approximately 3/4 mile long fixed flyover of a sensitive estuary called the North Fork St. Lucie River. CSA created architectural features at each corner of the approach spans that signify the entrance to the estuary and conveys the community's value for the natural environment. The inclusion of the commissioned art work by Guy Harvey which features the River's natural habitat completes the design of the bridge aesthetics.

The CSA design team has also transformed several bridge tender houses including Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, Hillsboro Boulevard and Commercial Boulevard.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds Scheduled to Honor Veterans at Clarke County Freedom Rock Dedication

MURRAY, Iowa /ScoopCloud/ -- Clarke County, Iowa's favorite daughter, Governor Kim Reynolds will join hundreds of community members, leaders and veterans in a ceremonial dedication of Clarke County's Freedom Rock. Jason Gibbs, member of the Clarke County Freedom Rock and Honor Wall Committee said the program should last about 30 minutes, and guests are invited to lunch at the Murray High School following the program.

Seating will be limited, so guests are encouraged to arrive early, use the shuttle services available from Murray, Osceola, and the Bunn Manufacturing locations and to bring their own lawn chairs.

About the Clarke County Freedom Rock:

Sorensen began painting the original Freedom Rock, located north of Greenfield, Iowa, in 1999 after being inspired by the movie "Saving Private Ryan."

His original rock, which was painted with a new design each Memorial Day, quickly garnered local, regional and national recognition. Sorensen soon decided to spread the message of the Freedom Rock by committing to painting a Freedom Rock in each of Iowa's 99 counties and beyond. According to TheFreedomRock.com Web site, the Clarke County Freedom Rock is 67th of 68 current honorary displays.

Since Sorensen designs each rock to represent the military members and history of each county, Sorensen and the Clarke County Freedom Rock and Honor Wall committee started conversations in the fall of 2015 to brainstorm ideas and themes for the rock being dedicated on Saturday.

"That usually means finding specific veterans," Sorensen said while working on another Freedom Rock in Cresco. "We landed on killed in action. That's why the front side of that (rock) is a gold star family member clutching a flag that was given to them and the ghost of the fallen soldier touching her."

The front face of the Clarke County Freedom Rock also features a quote from Abraham Lincoln.

The back face of the Clarke County Freedom Rock, facing the Honor Wall, features illustrations of Maxton Daniel, Raymond Harris, George Horton, Herschel Oehlert and Bert Keeler - Clarke County residents who were killed in action.

The west side of the rock features a large red bull logo, signifying the 34th Infantry Division, which Highway 34 is named after.

"There was a guy from Garner, Iowa, driving by and he saw that red bull's face," Gibbs said. "It's got great history. This guy's dad was in the 34th Infantry Division. That was something Bubba added and thought would be appropriate. I'm so glad he did. That's a big deal to tens of thousands of people."

The Clarke County Freedom Rock Honor Wall:

Constructed behind the Freedom Rock is the Clarke County Freedom Rock Honor Wall, which gives individuals the opportunity to have a veteran's name engraved into plaques placed on the wall. To date, the Honor Wall has plaques representing over 450 veterans from Clarke County and surrounding areas. The Honor Wall is not limited to veterans who lived in Clarke County.

Gibbs said the committee wanted to give everyone an opportunity to have their veteran recognized on the wall, especially since there will be people from all over the country visiting the Freedom Rock and Honor Wall.

Iowa Governor, Kim Reynolds, has a special connection with the community in Clarke County. Redevelopment Management Associates (RMA) will be presenting its proposed Strategic Development Plan for Bimini Basin at a joint workshop before the City of Cape Coral and the South Cape Redevelopment Agency on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. City of Lake Forest votes to enter into agreement with 5 Bars to accelerate small cell wireless coverage and protect assets
