Marikel International Brings Caribbean Carnival Spirit to Leimert Park Village with a Post Juneteenth Starlight Parade

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- On the heels of Juneteenth, Los Angeles' Leimert Park Village will become ablaze with passion in honor of Caribbean American Heritage Month when Marikel International presents the inaugural Los Angeles Carnival Starlight Parade, a multicultural, fun filled family festival. Slated to take place Sunday, June 25, 2023, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., the parade will ignite Crenshaw Blvd. with a dramatic celebration of heritage and pride.

The evening festivities, produced by Marikel International and LA Carnival founder Marie Kellier, will serve as a prelude to the full scale LA Carnival coming to Leimert Park next year. The Los Angeles Carnival Starlight Parade is free and open to the public. Leimert Park Village is located at 4395 Leimert Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90008.

The vibrant gathering of people, businesses, artisans, musicians, and food vendors will launch with dancing on Crenshaw Boulevard to the pulsating cadence of 100 diverse drummers who will infuse the city with resonance and rhythm. The spectacular assembly will gather at Martin Luther King and Crenshaw Boulevards with dancers and revelers led by the LA Carnival Youth on Parade contingent. As daylight simmers to night, 100 beautiful flags, designed by the community and decorated with positive messages, will illuminate Crenshaw Blvd. with lights and a brilliant vision for peace. The procession culminates in the Leimert Park Art Walk with a grand drum circle and spirited call and response performances in People Street Plaza.

With the full event coming in 2024, Los Angeles Carnival is being positioned as a major destination event. Corporations, municipalities, and organizations will be able to utilize the occasion as a regional vehicle that celebrates their stories, representing the Los Angeles region as a leader in arts, culture, and technology to the international community.

According to LA Carnival founder, Marie Kellier, "Los Angeles Carnival is a part of an important movement. Over the last decade, Leimert Park Village has experienced a virtual rebirth with the emergence of dynamic young business owners staving off gentrification by staking their claim to this historic 'epicenter' of Black culture in Los Angeles. Our vision is to establish the Carnival as a world class arts and multicultural affair in this area for decades to come."

In preparation for the Los Angeles Carnival Starlight Parade, Kellier is conducting carnival arts residencies and workshops to train and teach young artists costume design and production skills.

Partially funded by a California Arts Council Youth Development grant, the workshops are training a new cohort of leaders who are helping to produce the June 25 launch and will continue as associate producers of LA Carnival in 2024.

The first set of paid youth residencies and free community workshops began on May 23 in Leimert Park and will continue every Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Leimert Park People Street Plaza.

Over the next year, Marikel International alongside a network of youth producers, nonprofit, corporate and community partners, will provide job opportunities and resources by training producers, creatives, and youth artists across the 88 cities of Los Angeles County.

"This inclusion of diverse Angelenos from across Greater Los Angeles will allow the creativity and traditions of various cultures to fill the streets with music, culture, dance, and masquerade representing the voice and rhythm of our region," cites Kellier.

Traditional Caribbean carnivals are extremely popular around the world and held over several days. Carnivals are largely comprised of amazing gatherings of dazzling costumed masqueraders, who wear the same style or color as part of the same 'band.' Each 'carnival band' is organized by a 'band leader.' The leader chooses the theme and designs the attire or works with a designer and costume maker to manufacture them. The band leader then recruits revelers who purchase their designs and come out to 'play' in their band.

Marie Kellier's LA Carnival On Tour is the traveling component of LA Carnival. It brings carnival culture to schools and communities throughout the region that would not normally experience this art form. It presents an authentic street performance vibe with a full standard-based educational program. Started in 1998, Los Angeles Carnival is the longest running Caribbean carnival organization in Southern California, and is part of the international circuit of Caribbean carnivals imported into communities worldwide by Caribbean immigrants since the 1930's.

Having built LA Carnival from the ground up, Kellier is no stranger to pioneering community work. It was Kellier's persistence and 'can do' spirit, along with the support of grant funders and community volunteers, who created the infrastructure and built the foundation for other Caribbean carnival events now happening in the region.

All Angelenos across the city and county of Los Angeles and beyond, are invited to be part of Los Angeles Carnival Starlight Parade, regardless of cultural origin, status, physical ability, belief, or orientation. Businesses along the route and across the region are encouraged to participate as sponsors or exhibitors and to bring their teams out to the parade.

The Los Angeles Carnival Starlight Parade highlights Caribbean American Heritage Month with a joyous post Juneteenth observance that continues the commemoration of cultural diversity. Mark your calendars now and get a taste of the Caribbean without having to board a plane!

For more details and information, go to https://www.losangelescarnival.com/ or email the Los Angeles Carnival's production office at lacarnivalarts@gmail.com.

Enthusiasm Filled the Lake as Scuba Divers Came Together for International Scuba’s 6th Annual Ice Hole Festival on Feb 6, 2023, at Lake Okoboji, IA

LAKE OKOBOJI, Iowa /ScoopCloud/ -- Scuba divers from Canada, Mexico, and the USA joined International Scuba's 6th Annual Ice Hole Festival. The week started off with pro level scuba diving training. There were several people to help gear up. As soon as you are out of the water, our hospitality team takes over, with a cup of hot soup, drinks and more food. All while other divers help take your kit off.

Once you are warmed up you rotate into a support position. This is the secret that brings everyone together. The amount of coordinated teamwork is nonnegotiable, and everyone takes their job seriously.

Instructors and even a course director got their certifications on site. International Scuba showed how training agencies can work well together with PADI and SSI both sharing the hole to create new ice diving professionals. With our new instructors and the group's experience, they had things running smoothly all week.

PADI, one of our title sponsors has stepped up big for several years. On loan for the weekend is Charles Dupont, ice diving expert and PADI Rep for much of Canada. SSI also showed up to represent. Mark R Scott III has been a large portion of our program. It took a year to fully embrace this PADI and SSI effort, but it works, and all of us are winners for it. Fourth Element was our first sponsor and a serious asset to the Ice Hole Festival. International Scuba also welcomed Boji Divers. They conducted most of the salvage on the lake by cutting the hole. Cutting ice is no easy chore.

"Our mission was to create ice divers from the top down, and I believe this festival has a very strong group of Instructors and Course Directors, ready to take us forward every year," says Rich Thomas, Owner and Operator of International Scuba.

Next year's event is already in the books. Save the date: February 8 through 11, 2024. Lake Okoboji, Iowa.

Dive Shops: reach out to receive promotional materials. Early bird shops will benefit with links to sign up in our ice hole shop locater, posters, and a minimum of one industry wide press release.

If you are interested in getting involved with shops that want to build scuba, visit International Scuba here: https://internationalscuba.com/. Or call 972-416-8400.

Berry Tastes and Treats at 37th Annual California Strawberry Festival

VENTURA, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The 37th Annual California Strawberry Festival makes its debut at the Ventura County Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday, May 20 and 21 with strawberry-themed food, beverages and contests, live entertainment, rides and activities. This year marks the first time the festival is being held at the fairgrounds (10 W. Harbor Blvd., Ventura, CA 93001). Hours are 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. both days.

For strawberry lovers, the California Strawberry Festival is two days of strawberry heaven. Over 50 food and beverage vendors will serve such treats as strawberry pies, strawberry-topped funnel cakes, strawberry nachos, deep-fried strawberries, berry kabobs, strawberry tacos, strawberry beer and smoothies. Festivalgoers can build their own strawberry shortcakes, piling on as many strawberries and whipped cream as possible.

Nearly 50,000 people are expected to attend the festival over two days, many coming from Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Riverside and Orange counties. An estimated 1.5 million strawberries will be consumed over the two-day festival. Strawberries are the number one crop in Ventura County. Strawberries grown in the Oxnard Plain are considered by many to be the best-tasting and juiciest in the world. For festivalgoers who want to take a bit of the festival home, Ventura County family-owned farms will be selling fresh-picked, vine-ripened strawberries at the festival in 3-packs, half trays and full trays.

On two stages, 24 bands offering reggae, Latin, rock, country, and R&B music will perform. Popular LA-based reggae artist, Arise Roots, will take the stage at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. In the festival's Strawberryland, kids can enjoy science and magic shows on the Jest in Time Family Fun Stage presented by Wonderfold.

The stage will also be the site of the Berry Baby Fashion Parade presented by SoCalFord at 2 p.m. both days. Kids from infants to four years of age can show off their strawberry-themed costumes from stage (with the help of their parents). There is also a Strawberry Tart Toss and a Ninja National obstacle course.

The California Strawberry Festival features more than 200 artisans from throughout the West who will showcase their goods. Many of the artists and crafters have been coming to the festival for years.

"Festivals allow shoppers to get an up-close look at items before buying. They can talk with the artisans to learn more about their work. It's an experience that you don't have when shopping online," says Dana Hale-Mounier, director of Pacific Fine Arts Festivals and coordinator of the festival's arts and craft booths.

"We are looking forward to providing a comfortable festivalgoer experience--a rain or shine venue with three food courts, indoor space for our artists and crafters, indoor and outdoor dining areas, paved parking on site, an Amtrak Station across the street, close proximity to the 101 Freeway, and easy access to free shuttles," says Dean Kato, festival chair.

Through the California Strawberry Festival, participating nonprofit organizations have raised over $5 million.

"Our goal has always been to create a celebration in honor of the strawberries that grow prolifically throughout our rich agricultural region and to support other nonprofits within our community," says Kato. "Our all-volunteer board is dedicated to providing a wonderful two-day experience for festivalgoers."

General admission is $15. For active military and their dependents with ID and seniors 62 years and older, admission is $10 and for ages 5 to 12, admission is $8. Children 4 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased in advance at https://castrawberryfestival.org/ or upon entry to the festival.

A limited amount of parking is available onsite for $20 per vehicle. Free shuttles will run every 15 minutes from locations in Oxnard and Ventura. The Ventura Amtrak Station is onsite for out-of-area visitors. For parking options, go to https://castrawberryfestival.org/getting-here/free-shuttle-service.

IMPACT AZ 2025 Kicks Off Arizona’s Largest Supplier Diversity Readiness Program with More Than 50 Black-owned Businesses

PHOENIX, Ariz. /ScoopCloud/ -- Setting the stage for dramatic change among Black-owned Arizona businesses, IMPACT AZ 2025 is kicking off its supplier diversity readiness program to close the racial wealth gap for business owners through a three-year supplier diversity readiness program, Thinkzilla Consulting Group announced today.

The program offers a hybrid of an online curriculum through an interactive e-learning platform with in-person sessions, mentorship and live business coaching. Additionally, business owners a strategic action growth plan with benchmarks and performance targets to access the support and resources necessary to win contracts. The first cohort launches April 24, 2023, in Scottsdale, Arizona, with a full-day business assessment and welcome remarks from major community stakeholders.

The Millionaire Mastermind Academy, a leading nonprofit organization that has helped more than 8,000 diverse women entrepreneurs across the country while addressing barriers to economic mobility, will execute the Impact AZ 2025 programming in partnership with the Black Chamber of Arizona in response to the State of Black Business Report, which highlighted financial gaps and opportunities for diverse business owners.

The solutions-driven accelerator program will expand procurement opportunities with corporations and government entities, preparing business owners to win contracts. Fortune 500 companies spend about 2% annually on minority-owned suppliers, well short of the 10-15% spending goals many corporations set each year, leading to significant improvement opportunities for traditional supplier diversity approaches.

"We are thrilled to be a part of moving the great state of Arizona forward," said Dr. Velma Trayham, founder of the Millionaire Mastermind Academy. "More than 50 local businesses now have access to opportunities and resources that will create job opportunities and economic impact. I look forward to helping more than 250 companies get access to contracting readiness and opportunities. We are incredibly grateful to our sponsors, technical assistance partners, mentors and advisors for making this program possible."

JPMorgan Chase is the title sponsor for IMPACT AZ 2025, with additional sponsorship from Arizona Public Service, Salt River Project, Via West Group, American Landmark Apartments, and community partners such as Greater Phoenix Economic Council, the City of Phoenix, the Arizona Informant, Commerce Bank AZ, Growth Partners Arizona, AIANNH Project NABEDC, operated by the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation and SCORE.

"Impact AZ 2025 is groundbreaking for its size and focus on Black entrepreneurs, with clearly measurable metrics focused on advancing Black-owned businesses from solopreneurship to employer-based companies that surpass the $1 million revenue threshold," said Robin Reed, CEO of the Black Chamber of Arizona. "Using data from the State of Black Business report, Impact AZ addresses the most urgent needs for Black-owned businesses today."

The Millionaire Mastermind Academy's Scottsdale office at Arizona State University's Skysong 3 will provide a physical space for entrepreneurs to meet with mentors and corporations as part of the program, which includes three nine-month accelerators. The space will also support collaboration, networking opportunities and round table discussions for business growth.

"JPMorgan Chase is profoundly committed to supporting programs that help close the racial wealth gap and uplifting our Black business and entrepreneurial community is key to achieving that goal," said Ashley Kelly, Senior Business Consultant for Chase in Arizona. "This program will deliver expertise and support to help participants scale and grow their businesses in a sustainable manner. I'm very excited about supporting this collaboration."

"This market cannot fully reach its potential while there are segments of our population underrepresented in high-wage occupations or unable to receive the requisite capital to support innovative business," said Chris Camacho, President and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council. "This initiative takes a critical step in addressing this disparity, with an actionable, solution-driven approach to leveraging regional connections to support Black-owned suppliers and businesses."

Fifty-two Arizona businesses have been accepted into the program, including:

1st Infinity Realty, LLC | 1st Step to Greatness Childcare and Learning Center | Advanced Professional Security | Agape Mortgage Group | All Are Heard Translation/Notary Service | Alla Herbs | Alyrik's Castle | Artastic Art | Beep Beep Interlock | Bri Bucks Coaching and Credit | Bridge Consulting Service, LLC | Broom Bush Tea Co. | Buddhalovmobile | Business Credit Works | Chanel Your Stylist | Citrines, LLC | Coco B Cares | Connect Consulting Solutions DNA Lifestyles, LLC | Down Syndrome Forgotten| Education FIRM, LLC | Essential IV Drip | Finance Therapy Group | Heal Me Fit | Healing Hands | Oasis Wellness Center & Apothecary, LLC | i see water LLC | Inquisicare | Jenga Haus | Kings Glow LLC| LifeologyAZ, Inc.| Lion Eye Design, LLC | Lionsmanseamoss | Live Like You Coaching, LLC | Ms. Martha's Caribbean Kitchen LLC | N-Ovate Business Solutions, LLC | PhillipRobert LLC | Phoenix Play Dates and Field Trips | Phoenix's Favorite Commercial Cleaner | Phree Tha Truth | Radiant Sky Wellness Center | Risome | Simply Celeste's | Sweeping Broom | The Outlandish Blueprint | Top Onyx LLC | TRUE CONFESSION | Vision World LLC | W3AVING W3BS | Yhorlife Inc | Zion Institute.

EOarts Brings Together Extraordinary International Talents From Different Creative Industries For A Show In Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- On March 18, 2023, The Espejo Organization for the Arts (EOarts) will present THE EXTRAORDINARIES, an exhibition that brings together some of the best foreign-born talents working in the American creative industry. "The goal of the show is to highlight the quality and innovation that imported talent brings to the cultural and creative landscape of the US," said Kika Espejo, Director of EOarts.

The show, which takes its title from the denomination of the visa and permanent resident status awarded to professionals of extraordinary ability in the field of the arts, includes an array of creative practices from immigrant artists from all over the world.

"Creatives who have obtained Extraordinary Ability immigration statuses have demonstrated their original contribution to their field but don't often get much visibility, nor does the wide public recognize what an important role imported talent plays in the development of our country's creative industry," Espejo explains.

This show presents a survey of the works that a selection of these professionals are currently developing, bringing together creators of many different industries to promote and bring awareness to the significance that immigrant talents play in the development of the American cultural field.

The show will count on the participation of accomplished and award-winning international artists and creative professionals. In the area of visual arts, the exhibition will present the works of Brazilian painter and illustrator Niege Borges, Japanese sand artist Naoshi, Lebanese mix media artist Hildos, Hongkongese artist and milliner Penny Chu, Iranian Illustrator Elham Ataeiazar, and Spanish painters Amaia Marzabal and Aida Miro. Macedonian visual artist Mensur Bojda, Ukranian surface and texture artist Maksym Kazarin, and Indian multidisciplinary artist Kuldeep Singh are also taking part in this show.

In the area of photography, the show will include three distinguished professionals, including the fashion and documentary photographer from Sweden, Izabella Demavlys, the Canadian fine art and wedding photographer Erica Reade, and the boudoir and fine arts photographer from Mexico, Gaspar Marquez, who is also involved in the production of the show.

Additionally, the event will include the works of exceptional creatives in the field of design, such as English graphic designer Crissy Bogusz, Chilean art director Nicolas Mardones, Indian urban designer Uttara Ramakrishnan, Spanish architectural designer Ana Avanzini, and the Czech 3D designers Johana & Maxim Kroft. In the area of fashion, the show will also count on the works of Chinese creative director Churou Wang, Japanese costume designer Saori Mitome, and Chinese bespoke tailor and designer Yuecen Cai.

Adding to the exhibition and organized with the support of Brazilian producer Roberta Fernandes, the event will also host two special performances and presentations. Spanish actor and producer Edu Diaz will present an excerpt from his successful play Fantastic Mr. S, recently presented at the United Solo Festival. The Brazilian editor and astrologist, Larissa Xavier, will also participate in the show with a presentation of her collaborative project "New York Women & The Zodiac."

"THE EXTRAORDINARIES is a one-of-its-kind event that intends to go beyond the mere experience of a traditional art show. Multidisciplinary shows have the ability to bring together works from many fields into a conversation, allowing not only to create intrinsic connections between pieces but to generate narratives that expand beyond the borders of each medium," says Colombian Guest Curator Julian Montenegro.

The exhibition will open to the public on Saturday, March 18, 2023, between 6:30 and 8:30 pm, at Meadow Studios (35 Meadow Street) in Brooklyn.

Black History Month – Teaching Black Children The Value Of Building Wealth, Saving Money, and Financial Literacy

NEW YORK, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- On the last day of Black History Month, nationally recognized Black Producer and Creator Joe Young, Jr., in partnership with JPMorgan Chase, will launch a print and digital comic book teaching financial literacy to students featuring "KEMET, BIG TIME SAVER."

On February 28, 2023, 10 a.m. at P.S. 171 Patrick Henry Preparatory school in Harlem, Principal Dimitres Pantelidis, will host a Black History Month event for fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade students to celebrate the conclusion of the month.

Students will officially meet KEMET, a ten-year-old time-traveling comic character who goes back to meet African-American historical firsts, legends, and inventors, both living and deceased, who share with KEMET what they have done to contribute to the outstanding accomplishments of building this country and improving civilization.

By traveling through a history time capsule called "Sankofa 82," KEMET, in mascot form, will talk to the students about the value of money and saving and the importance of financial literacy.

"There is a dire need for youth in urban areas to understand the importance of basic money management," said Joe Young, Founder and Producer of Joe Young Entertainment. "KEMET, BIG TIME SAVER will engage the students to think about the value of money, saving, and investing. Promoting financial literacy in our schools impacts the mind and behavior towards money management and understanding the value and importance of generational wealth."

"Financial health is a critical component of creating a stronger economic foundation and building generational wealth for the Black community," said Jumoke Fagbayi-Butts, Vice President and Senior Business Consultant at Chase. "We are committed to addressing the unique financial needs of those too often left behind in a growing economy. Our firm works with leaders like Joe Young to support the next generation of Black prosperity."

"We are happy to join nationally recognized cartoonist Joe Young, his cartoon character KEMET, BIG TIME SAVER, and JoAnn H. Price, Co-Founder/Managing Partner of Fairview Capital, to present this comic book to all students at P.S. 171 in Harlem," said Rocky Chowdhury, Vice President, and Community Manager for Chase in Harlem. "Building positive financial health habits early in life leads to great success, and applaud Joe's work to teach students responsible money habits that will help secure their financial futures."

KEMET, BIG TIME SAVER BACKGROUND

KEMET, BIG TIME SAVER comic book, was co-written by Joe Young and his daughter Paige Young. The comic book story features ten-year-old "Ro" who runs a lemonade stand and decides to use her profits from the revenues generated from her lemonade stand business to buy a new scooter. She gets frustrated after running into problems raising enough money.

KEMET, alerted about her dilemma, takes off in "Sankofa 82" to help her. He introduces Ro to three successful Black entrepreneurs from past and present: the late A.G. Gaston, one of the wealthiest African Americans of his time, including a $130 million business empire spanning communications, real estate, and insurance; JoAnn H. Price, Co-Founder/Managing Partner of Fairview Capital Partners (Private Equity and Venture Capital firm) with over $10.4 Billion in assets under management since inception; and the late Mary Ellen Pleasant, a 19th-century entrepreneur, financier, real estate magnate, and abolitionist who was the first self-made millionaire of African-American heritage.

Beginning in March, Young and his mascot KEMET will commence a tour to visit schools and youth groups with his KEMET BIG TIME SAVER PROGRAM. The KEMET youth activity sheets, which include fun and educational Black history facts, are distributed nationwide to schools and Black newspapers, reaching over 22 million readers a week. Young is in pre-production for the KEMET BIG TIME SAVER animated film.

Arlington Philharmonic to premiere 242 year-old work in upcoming concert

ARLINGTON, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the United States premiere a composition written in 1781 by Marianna Martines, a student of Franz Joseph Haydn. Martines work is the overture to her oratorio "Isacco." This edition by the Philharmonic Orchestra's Music Director Orlando Cela aims to preserve as much as possible the intentions of the composer, and show the mastery of Martines.

Martines was born in Vienna in 1744, in a building where luminary artists resided - Nicola Porpora and Franz Joseph Haydn, for example - above the chambers of the Esterhazy dowager princess. The poet Metastasio lived with Martines' family since 1734, and he helped to connect Martines to these artists, and more. By age ten, Martines was performing for the Imperial court, either singing or playing her compositions, which showed amazing prowess in her writing and her singing, since these compositions were not easy. She was the first woman to be inducted into the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, and became a very popular musician in her day, being compared to CPE Bach on her harpsichord playing, and possibly having influenced the then 12 y.o. Mozart's Mass KV. 139.

The overture to be performed will open the Philharmonic Society of Arlington's Mid-Winter Concert entitled "It's All About Papa," since all the works are written by or influenced by "Papa" Franz Joseph Haydn. The rest of the program will include Johannes Brahms' "Variations on a Theme by Haydn," and Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 2 in D, featuring the 2022 Philharmonic Society of Arlington's Young Artist Competition Winner, cellist Elena Ariza.

Schedule:

The concert will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2023, 7:30 p.m. at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist, 630 Mass. Ave, Arlington, MA, led by Cela.

Tickets will be on sale at the door:

$20 General Admission, $15 Students/Seniors, $5 Children 17 & Under. Wheelchair Accessible. Masking required to attend.

About The Philharmonic Society of Arlington:

The Philharmonic Society of Arlington, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community organization incorporating The Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra, The Arlington-Belmont Chorale, and The Arlington-Belmont Chamber Chorus.

California Strawberry Festival is Back – at a New Venue

OXNARD, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- After a three-year hiatus due to challenges brought on by the pandemic, the 2023 California Strawberry Festival will take place May 20-21. For the first time ever, the event will be held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

"We are thrilled to relaunch the California Strawberry Festival in 2023 at the Fairgrounds," says Dean Kato, Chairman of the California Strawberry Festival Board of Directors. "We realized that the event had outgrown the available space at our longtime venue, Oxnard's College Park. It's our 'comeback' year - and we want to come out bigger and better than ever."

This isn't the first time the Festival has outgrown a location, and the Fairgrounds venue was considered when the California Strawberry Festival moved from Channel Islands Harbor to College Park in 1991.

"Although the Festival has historically taken place in Oxnard, it belongs to all of Ventura County," says Kato.

The beachside location provides iconic views, and Ventura offers up a vibrant downtown just a few blocks away, with hotels, restaurants, and nightlife. Guests will appreciate that the Fairgrounds is close to the 101 freeway and has onsite parking, and the Festival will continue to host free shuttle services from many convenient locations.

Ventura's Amtrak station is situated adjacent to the Fairgrounds, so it's easier than ever to take the train directly to the Festival. Another benefit is that buildings, lighting, and restrooms are built-in amenities at the rain-or-shine venue.

"The Ventura County Fairgrounds and Event Center was built with the space and structural elements to accommodate large festivals," says Fairgrounds CEO Stacy Rianda. "We're looking forward to hosting the California Strawberry Festival."

The California Strawberry Festival is known in Ventura County as the kick-off to summertime, and tens of thousands of festivalgoers attend the celebration each year. Local non-profit organizations, food vendors, artists and crafters, entertainers, sponsors and hundreds of volunteers are instrumental to its success.

The all-volunteer board is ready for the opportunity to raise the bar in 2023.

"We've already been hard at work on the re-launch," says Kato. "Change is exciting. But of course, some things will stay the same - like the always-popular $5 build-your-own strawberry shortcake, fresh-picked local strawberries, and really nice arts and crafts. We're anticipating an outstanding Festival in 2023."

To keep posted on the 2023 California Strawberry Festival, go to https://castrawberryfestival.org/ or Facebook @CaliforniaStrawberryFestival.

Lowell Chamber Orchestra’s December performance contemplates immigration, history

LOWELL, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- Nearly forty percent of Americans can trace at least one ancestor to Ellis Island, and the Lowell Chamber Orchestra will present a work based on three actual stories of the famous islands that encompass the immigrant experience.

Composer Gabriele Vanoni spent half year researching for his work "Island of Peoples," a multimedia composition based around three true stories from Ellis Island that are just as relevant today as they were when they happened, since they deal with struggle, pain and sadness, but also joy, love, friendship, and faith.

"My family has a connexion with Ellis Island because in the museum, you can look up for passengers," says Vanoni, "And I found the record. I found the ship where they came. When I got to passengers' search looking for my family's history, I found out about the Ellis Island Oral Histories.I found this amazing collection of stories of people who basically just left their country without knowing what to expect."

These stories are told and unfold intertwined around a few common traits: the longing for home, the perils of traveling for days, and the cultural, social and human uncertainties of the new world, through the fabric of musical mastery that only Vanoni can delivery.

When asked to describe his work "Island of Peoples," Vanoni says "What you're gonna hear is basically three snapshots. This is a multimedia work in which you will have electronic music interludes with some media projection, and you're gonna have three works for ensemble, which are snapshots of three stories."

While the ensemble is very small - flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and percussion - Vanoni's orchestration makes it a perfect vessel to express the many feelings imbued in the stories. Soprano Mary Mackenzie and tenor Kartik Ayysola are the vocalists who bring to life the three stories, sometimes singing, sometimes speaking.

Vanoni decided on three particular stories because "it was important to give a little bit of a glimpse of the experience to the listener. The scenes do follow pretty much like a trip. So the first section talks about leaving the country. Then the interviews and the middle section talks about being on Ellis Island. And the end of it is just the legacy, if you wish: the history and the future if you wish."

Like all Lowell Chamber Orchestra concerts, the performance is free and open to the public, and will take place on: Saturday, December 17, 2022, 7:30 p.m., at Middlesex Community College's Richard and Nancy Donahue Academic Arts Center (240 Central Street, Lowell, MA).

This concert is part of Middlesex Community College's "A World of Music Concert Series."

Grief Opens Path to Reconnection, Resilience in New Online Retreat Nov. 5-6

WEAVERVILLE, N.C. /ScoopCloud/ -- Grief, like the seasons, is part of the normal cycle of life, yet each person experiences it differently. Join grief guides Melody LeBaron and Dean Spillane-Walker for "Heart Broken Open: Grief as a Sacred Path to Reconnection and Resilience," a new online retreat for the bereaved, on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5-6, 2022. The event is presented by: Transforming Space, Self, and Loss; and by Living Resilience.

The event is designed to transform the experience of grief for those experiencing any significant loss. These include those experiencing:

* the loss of a relationship, family member, pet, home or job

* struggles with trauma, a diagnosis, or an illness

* grief for the devastation of the planet and its peoples

* difficulty coping with stuckness, sadness, or loneliness

Learn more: https://livingresilience.net/griefretreat/

Caregivers such as family members, therapists, coaches, health and wellness practitioners may also benefit from the ritual practices of grief within a community setting.

"Our ancestors accepted grief as a normal part of life," says LeBaron. "They knew that grief buried alive kills the mind, the body, the soul."

LeBaron is the author of "Transforming Death: Creating Sacred Space for the Dying" (ISBN: 978-1733477123) a guide for the dying and their caregivers, based on her experience as a midwife for the deaths of 12 of her closest loved ones including her 17-year old son, mother, and sister.

"So, when one person grieved, the tribe gathered and formed 'a community of mourners,'" she says. "In other words, when a loss happened to one member of the tribe, it was processed and grieved-by the entire tribe."

Walker says that within a community, grief can be transformed. "Grief is feral," he says. "It does not come on demand. But grief can be evoked-through stories, writing, movement, and ritual."

Walker is author of "The Impossible Conversation: Choosing Reconnection and Resilience at the End of Business as Usual" (ISBN: 978-0692900017). He helps create consciousness within communities in ways that encourage the maturation of deep inner resources, as its members bravely face an unimaginable future.

"Grief can be welcomed, integrated, and transformed within the sacred space formed by an intentional community," Walker says.

But, they say, some losses can't be managed alone. People may need a community of grievers in order to complete the grief cycle.

"When grief is fully processed and integrated, it transforms into a life-force, a fuel that revitalizes and propels us into reconnection and resilience, as individuals, families, and communities," says Walker.

But when grief is ignored, tamped down, buried alive, vitality may be buried with it.

"We live in a time when we are experiencing devastating personal-and planetary-loss. It is no longer advisable to grieve privately, to force ourselves to 'get over it,'" says LeBaron.

Now is the time for a conscious, courageous community grieving. The retreat will include:

* Powerful writing practice to assist in opening our stories of loss

* Deepening our trust in our emotional and body wisdom

* Sharing our stories of loss in a confidential container, to the extent you want that

* An avenue to express our grief over world events

* Learning practices and healing tools to use after the retreat

* Music and Movement that allow us to embody and then release emotions

To learn more about "Heart Broken Open: Grief as a Sacred Path to Reconnection and Resilience," or to sign up to attend on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., and on Sunday, Nov. 6, from noon to 5 p.m., visit: https://livingresilience.net/griefretreat/.
