Award-winning documentary, ‘Just One’ selected for August 3 screening at San Antonio Film Festival

CYPRESS, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- One single encounter with the police can change a young person's life forever - especially children of color. Alexander. "Kiddos without family support not only become part of the juvenile correctional system but oftentimes the foster care system as well," she continued.

Alexander worked with Collective Action for Youth (CA4Y) to produce and direct the documentary, "Just One."

The film tells the story of two young people who overcame life in both systems and has been selected for screening at the 28th Annual San Antonio Film Festival. The film will screen on Wednesday, August 3 between 5 and 7 PM at the Radius Center, 106 Auditorium Circle #120, in San Antonio, TX.

"I had no idea what a dual-status youth was before taking this project," said Alexander. "I was unaware that this population even existed and that organizations like Collective Action for Youth were helping these incredible young people navigate their journeys," she continued. "It was truly an honor to help them tell their story," she said.

The documentary focuses on the stories of CA4Y staff members, Dieter Cantu and Angel Jackson. The two share the moment their lives were forever changed, how they overcame their challenges and the policies and legislation they're working to change. "In my initial meeting it was made quite clear that whatever work I produced had to depict them from an empowered place," Alexander remembers. "There would be no victimizing or 'white saviors' to edify," she recalled.

"Just One" opens with a dramatic court scene and has an unexpected twist at the end. It also includes a heart-wrenching interview with former Texas Juvenile Correctional Officer, Sharee Cammon. Harris County Dual Status Juvenile Probation Department Supervisor, Deidra Ewing assures viewers that the department is more "compassionate" and does what she calls "heart work."

This is the second film festival recognition for "Just One." The film won a Silver Remi from the 55th WorldFest Houston International Film Festival in April.

Dr. Mukes transcribed the book for him and felt it was important to help Sammy find his literary voice while maintaining a sense of wonder and imagination. "When we started on this project almost two years ago, our country was in a turbulent time. With the onset of COVID-19 and the spotlight on racial disparages, we really wanted Sammy to just create stories that were fun and lighthearted."

Originally from Oklahoma City, Sammy is excited he returned for the summer while working on his second book. "I love when we come to Oklahoma City. It's so much fun to spend time with my family," said Sammy. "I'm also excited to meet other kids at the book readings." He wants to encourage other kids to write books and hopes to serve as an inspiration.

"Kids make great authors because we know what other kids like," said Sammy. "I think more kids should write books...they just need to be encouraged and told that it's possible."

The book is a comical story about a boy who finally decides to sleep in his bed. While fast asleep, a mysterious monster wakes him up from his dream. Confused as to exactly what the monster is and what the monster wants, the brave boy contemplates a series of possibilities as he tries to unlock the mystery. Early reviews call the book "funny, engaging and delightful."

MCTlive! Lock Volume Indices: June 2022 Data

A broad-based view of the entire market provides a more accurate picture of mortgage originations versus indices that are influenced by mega lenders. The June MCTlive! Lock Volume Indices is broken out by transaction type: purchase, rate/term refinance, and cash out refinance.

June MCTlive! Lock Volume Indices show that that total mortgage rate locks by dollar volume decreased 3.8 percent in June, and total lock volume is down 32.0 percent from a year ago as purchases continue to make up most originator volume. Purchase locks declined 1.63 percent month-over-month, but a mere 4.6 percent from a year ago. The increase in mortgage rates is also evident as refinance volume continues to fall. Rate/term refinances are down 12.4 percent and cash out refinances are down 18.7 percent month-over-month. From one year ago, cash out refinance volume is down 64.5 percent, while rate/term refinance volume has dropped 90.4 percent. Given rate/term refinance volume was already down 90 percent year-over-year in the May MCTlive! Lock Volume Indices, this month's drop does not change the total much. Please note that loan sizes were up 8.3 percent over the past year, with the average loan amount increasing from $291k to $315k.

It is important to note that MCT's rate lock activity indices are based on actual dollar volume of locked loans, not number of applications. Especially in a tight purchase market, MCT believes its methodology (using actual loans locked vs. applications) is a more reliable metric. There is a higher likelihood of having multiple applications per funded loan, and prequals do not convert at as high of a rate in the current market as has historically been the case - especially when applications are counted at the early stage of entering a property address.

Black Maternal Mental Health Week Begins July 19 – Shades of Blue Project will host a week-long event

Black Maternal Mental Health Week will be held July 19 through July 25 and includes an in-person training session, a two-day summit, a community awards brunch, a walk and family fun day, and ends with a State of Black Maternal Mental Health Roundtable discussion.

"We have many issues in our city around mortality and morbidity and its ties to postpartum mental health complications," Matthews stated. "We've always had a problem, but what will we do to solve it?" she asked.

Matthews and her collaborative partner, Kimberly A. Baker, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Health Promotion & Behavioral Science, say they know that it will take "education, awareness, and action" to finally see a decrease in Black maternal morbidity.

It's important to listen for any noises from your attic, this could indicate a bat infestation or another wildlife problem.

Entry Points

Bats use the same one or two entry points to access your attic and this will most likely be found along near your roof. Wall vents, gable vents or loose eaves or siding can be entry points as well. Most of the time you will be able to see it from the exterior of your home. Bats tend to leave a greasy film close to the access point, especially on a lighter color siding.

Droppings

Bats that reside in an attic will often relieve themselves as they squeeze through the opening, this will look dark, spotted, oily or streaky. Look along your eaves and siding to any potential opening when walking around your home.

Visual confirmation

Bats are active in the evening and at night, the best time to confirm the presence of bats in your home is to see them leaving. If you notice an entry point or droppings, wait outside in the evening, and keep an eye out in that area. If you have a bat issue you will most likely see them entering and exiting at this time.

Feeding Roosts

Bats can have several roosts, which they typically use for sleeping and eating. These roosts can often be close together, especially in an attic. Feeding roosts are the easiest to spot as there will be droppings under these roosts as the bats will digest their meals.

Mating

Bat mating season starts in the summer and continues into the fall. This is the most active time of year for bats as they will become more active and fly together or in groups. During mating season, it is also possible to see bats out during the daytime.

Scratch Marks

Bats will leave scratch marks on the surfaces they perch to, which will become noticeable, especially on wood surfaces or drywall. This could also indicate another problem with mice or wildlife, it is important to have a professional check out if you find scratch marks.

Brown Stains on Your Ceiling

If you have many bats in your attic or they have resided for a long time, it is possible that bat urine and excrement can leak into the sheetrock, and you will start seeing brown stains on your ceiling that are similar to a water leak.

Strong Smell in Your Attic

If you are in your attic and notice a very strong ammonia smell, this could be caused by a buildup of bat urine and lack of ventilation. Even if the ammonia smell is subtle, it could indicate that a bat or other animal is urinating in your attic.
