Jaiimoni Starr releases single ‘Stop and I Go,’ launching career at age 16

ST. LOUIS, Mo. /ScoopCloud/ -- Jaiimoni Starr, who sung solo songs and performed praise dances at church, and began her career doing cover raps, launches her first professional rap single with "Stop and I Go." She is 16.

Starr presented her first solo rap at East St. Louis Senior High School for a Black history program, and ever since her goal has been to express herself through music.

"The song was 'Glory,' by artists John Legend and Common. This is when I first realized I have rhythm and an interest in rapping," Starr writes on her website.

Since entering high school, she says, "I have experienced more complex things about life ... my writing style became deeper and more from a place of positivity, pain, eagerness, and venting. I wrote from what I felt because I wanted people to understand who I was through the songs I wrote.

"I aspire to teach young women that music doesn't always have to be portrayed in a negative and degrading way, also that you can get a message across and still sound or appear cool. I've learned that music can have a positive and negative effect on our generation, and its vibrations."

With an understanding of phrasing and song craft beyond her years, "she has an ease and flow in her writing and performing like she has been rapping for a long time," Martinez Robinson, Co-manager at Daugherty Entertainment said.

Allen Daugherty, Daugherty Entertainment, is managing the artist. Sham, one half of the Grammy award-winning duo the TrakStarz who discovered St. Louis music artist Chingy, and has worked with artists including Ludacris, 2chainz, Janet Jackson, & Usher, has teamed up with new production partner Virus, who toured alongside of Beyoncé, to produce the single.

Equity Distribution, created by Jay-Z, is a global music-distribution platform that allows artists to retain ownership of their masters and has signed a distribution deal with Starr and Daugherty Ent.

"We're really excited for Jaiimoni, she's an enormous talent and this break out for her is huge," Daugherty said.

ACNM Reaffirms Opposition to Legislative Threats to Abortion Care

SILVER SPRING, Md. /ScoopCloud/ -- American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) is committed to people having unfettered access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care services, including abortion care, that are readily available, affordable, and guided by objective evidence-based information. Given this position, ACNM is dismayed by the failure of the United States Supreme Court to block the implementation of Texas Senate Bill 8, legislation that allows for the ban of abortions (which would include cases of rape or incest) as early as six weeks into pregnancy.

This decision sets in motion a dangerous precedent of upending the protections afforded under Roe v. Wade by allowing the most restrictive abortion law to go into effect in the second largest state in the country.

ACNM opposes legislative threats to abortion care. ACNM President, Cathy Collins-Fulea states, "ACNM continues to stand by our position that as midwives, we trust our patients as the experts of their own well-being and support each person's right to self-determination, access to comprehensive health information, and active participation in all aspects of an individualized plan of care."

The ACNM Code of Ethics mandates that midwives engage in the process of non-coercive, evidence-based informed consent and shared decision-making. Therefore, we object to any legislation and/or regulation that interferes with the patient-provider relationship.

This commitment includes advocating to keep abortion access unconditionally safe and legal for all people midwives serve, but especially for vulnerable populations with limited resources and unequal access to quality healthcare," stated ACNM CEO Katrina Holland.

Los Altos CA Woman Recognized for Work Helping Women Who Feel Unsafe in Their Own Home

The recent passing of SB 1141 into law under Family Code 6320 incorporates coercive control into the definition of domestic violence and will help Ruth and her team promote the right of every woman and child to live in peace and safety in their own home.

Highlighting New Acquisitions on View at the Museum of Sex, NYC

Artist Zoya Cherkassky recently detoured from her usual practice to explore the topic of female sex work in a series called "Women Who Work." In this drawing, Cherkassky beautifully and hauntingly portrays the disassociation and alienation many women experience during sexual intercourse and intimacy. Inspired by the horrific story and subsequent Russian mythologization of Viktor Mokhov, who abducted two teenage girls in 2000 and held them hostage as enslaved sex workers for four years in a bunker, the drawing highlights the power dynamics, abuse and fear that can accompany sex and the sex work industry.

Specially designed in 1890 by French cabinet-maker Louis Soubrier for King Edward VII (1841-1910), the Prince of Wales and King of England from 1901 to 1910, who was also known as "Dirty Bertie," the love chair enabled the infamous playboy prince to partake in sexual amusement with minimal exertion in numerous ways, including with two ladies at once. Le Chabanais, one of the extravagant brothels of nineteenth and twentieth century Paris, kept the original chair in a private room for the future king's personal use. While the exact chair used by "Dirty Bertie" is now owned by Soubrier's great-grandson, the example on view at the Museum of Sex is one of just two replicas based on the original design. The only other known replica is on view at the Sex Machines Museum in Prague. The chair has been featured in both BBC and Smithsonian documentaries such as the "Private Lives of Monarchs."

As part of the rotation of new objects into "Artifact [xxx]," the Museum has also recently hung Keith Haring's "Bad Boys" (1986), a set of 6 framed silkscreen prints on loan from the Keith Haring Foundation until February 2022. The exhibition also features objects on loan from the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction at Indiana University Bloomington, Stanley B. Burns, MD Collection & Archive and the Dittrick Medical History Center at the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH.

Church of Scientology International Honors Those Who Served After the 9/11 Terror Attacks

NEW YORK, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. The Church of Scientology International honors the rescue workers and the Scientology Volunteer Ministers who served them. The unsung heroes who responded to the attacks at Ground Zero 20 years ago on September 11 brought hope and renewed belief at a time when an affirmation of the basic goodness of Mankind was sorely needed.

"As any New Yorker would tell you," said one of the first Volunteer Ministers to arrive on the scene, "to see the Twin Towers disintegrate was a living nightmare. Over 25,000 people were gotten out of the towers because of the work of the responders, civilians who were fire wardens for their floor, strangers assisting others out to safety, police, firefighters, emergency medical services responders, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice that day in service to others."

As the twin towers erupted in flame and smoke, downtown New York was a war zone recalls Scientologist Bill Runyon on an episode of the original TV series Destination Scientology on the Scientology Network. Runyon served as liaison between the Church of Scientology, its Volunteer Ministers and New York City officials. His wife and both children also served as Volunteer Ministers at Ground Zero, where they helped see to the needs of the rescue workers.

Scientologists from across New York and New Jersey immediately headed for the Church of Scientology New York, just off Times Square on West 46th Street. The Church soon became the communications and logistics hub of the Church's relief efforts. Over the next nine months, some 800 Scientologists from across the United States and abroad served at "the pit" to help rescue workers contend with the gruesome and hazardous conditions.

"We were under the pile, we were on top of it," said a retired New York City firefighter who served at Ground Zero. "We were chest-deep in muck." He recalls how the Volunteer Ministers were always there when they finished a shift. "We would come out of there. There was a whole support group on the outskirts of the pile. It made you feel good to know they were out there when you were going to come out of that hole."

Volunteer Ministers provided food, water, clothing, gear and other necessities to the cleanup crews. For nine months they continued to serve until all that remained of the World Trade Center was a cavernous pit.

"We kind of get a lot of the credit," said a New York City Police officer, "but I think a lot of the credit has to go to the people on the outskirts such as the Scientology volunteers and such that provided us with comfort while we were down there at a time when we needed it probably more than most people understand or realize."

At the 2001 celebration of the founding of the International Association of Scientologists (IAS) in October, Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige spoke of the impact of the Church of Scientology of New York as headquarters of the Ground Zero effort. "With their recent actions and the compassion they have shown they now have a prominence greater than ever before." He announced that the IAS would be funding the full top-to-bottom restoration of the New York Church "in appreciation for their being there to help the city when it counted."

Three years later, in September 2004, dedicating the new Church of Scientology of New York, Mr. Miscavige reiterated the importance of what New York Scientologists inspired across the rest of the world three years earlier: "For in the darkest of times and worst of places, you stood tall amongst it all as a shining beacon of light," serving as a living example of the motto of the Scientology Volunteer Minister: "Something can be done about it."

The Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers program is a religious social service created in the mid-1970s by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard.

A Volunteer Minister's mandate is to be "a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring truth and spiritual values to the lives of others." Their creed: "A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well."

Greek American Author Releases New Memoir ‘Sophia’s Return’

About the Author

Sophia Kouidou-Giles, was born in Greece, and as a Fulbright grant recipient, she was educated in the USA. She holds a Bachelors in Psychology and a Masters in Social Work. In her 34 year child welfare career, she served as a practitioner, educator, researcher and administrator publishing articles in Greek and English professional journals with a focus on child welfare services to abused/neglected children, and statewide responsibilities in child care licensing and adolescent services for youth in foster care in the State of Washington.

In recent years, her focus has shifted to writing non-fiction and poetry. Her Greek Language memoir, "Επιστροφή Στη Θεσσαλονίκη," published by Tyrfi Press in Greek, in 2019, is available in all Greek bookstores and in the US direct from the Author. Her poetry chapbook "Transitions and Passages" received recognition in a juried competition by the Contemporary Quilt Art when she worked in partnership with Deborah Gregory, an internationally known Quilt Artist.

In 2014, "Life on Egypt Street" placed 9th in the Fourth International short story competition and is published in an anthology entitled The Time Collection. Her writing has appeared in the following journals: Persimmon Tree, The Hellenic Voice, Assay, The Raven's Perch, The Blue Nib, The Writers and Readers Magazine. A member of AWP (Association of Writers & Writing Programs) and IBRA (Independent Book Publishers Associations), she has collaborated with author groups in Seattle, Washington, where she resides. Bellerjeau, an acclaimed historian and the Director of Education at Raynham Hall Museum, the former home of the Townsend family in Oyster Bay, New York, has researched the Townsend family and those they enslaved for over sixteen years. Her discovery of Liss lends important credence to not only the experience of a woman of color during America's founding period, but also contributes valuable insight into the extent of slavery in the North, long before the Civil War.

Slavery was not just a 19th-century issue. In fact, there were 244 years between the arrival of the first African slaves to the colony of Virginia in 1619 to the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. By contrast, there have only been 158 years between 1863 and 2021, with the United States having a longer history as a nation with slavery than without it. American history is grossly misrepresented when slavery is only acknowledged as an occurrence in the middle of the 19th century.

In "Espionage and Enslavement in the Revolution," we learn that Liss was first enslaved in Oyster Bay on Long Island, NY in the 1770's during the Revolutionary War by Robert Townsend's family. Townsend became a spy for George Washington and a key member of the legendary Culper Spy Ring. She escaped with a British commander named Col. Simcoe, later was re-enslaved in New York City, and after the war was separated from her toddler son and transported to Charleston, South Carolina where she was enslaved yet again. Robert's persistent efforts to bring her back to New York and reunite her with her child are the second half of this amazing narrative.

Vanessa Williams' own ancestral ties to Oyster Bay, which also date back to the early 1800's, endeared her personally to the tale of a woman that history overlooked. "Claire was able to trace my lineage back to the 1820's, all the way back to a time when slaves did not have a last name. I found her research about Liss captivating and intriguing. Here was a brave Black woman from Oyster Bay who started life as a slave, became involved with the spy Robert Townsend, and may have been a spy herself. She finally achieved her freedom all in the same area where my roots as an American go back hundreds of years. Historically marginalized stories are at last being brought to the forefront and Liss rises like a phoenix among them. Claire's Bellerjeau's collaborative effort with Tiffany Brooks brings history to life and reveals a new African American female hero, Liss!" cites Vanessa Williams.

"When I first uncovered Liss' story, not only was she completely invisible, but the very idea that there was slavery in New York during the Revolution was completely foreign to almost everyone," notes Bellerjeau. "In popular culture, we are generally given broad brush-stroke tropes about heroic figures like George Washington, Paul Revere, and the Sons of Liberty, and significant events like the Boston Massacre. For several years I resisted connecting Liss to the Townsend spy story, but as my research continued, the two stories merged. To me, what makes her so important in American history is we haven't had a person of color to focus on, to see the Revolution through their eyes. Our story, while unfolding among the well-known people and places of the Revolution, gives the reader a rare glimpse of what life was really like for enslaved people struggling though the upheaval of the time."

Ellen Havre Weis, founder of San Francisco pop culture museum, dies at 64

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Ellen Havre Weis, founder of San Francisco's Museum of Modern Mythology, died Tuesday, July 27. The cause was brain cancer, her husband, Gordon Whiting, announced today. Weis was sixty-four.

Born in Trenton, New Jersey, on May 14, 1957, Weis was raised in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, where she attended public schools. Her father was a product engineer. Her mother was a community college librarian.

Enrolling at the University of Iowa in 1975 to study writing, she quickly fell in with a group of intellectuals known as the Actualists, led by poet Anselm Hollo and small press publisher Allan Kornblum. Mentored by writer Jayne Anne Phillips, she published her first short fiction in North American Review.

In 1982 Weis moved to San Francisco where she founded the Museum of Modern Mythology with Matthew Cohen and Jeff Errick. The museum featured a collection of American advertising characters such as Mr. Clean and Jolly Green Giant, presented in a way to show their relation to mythic images and archetypes. The small museum quickly found wide acclaim, with feature stories in the Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, People and the New York Times. Prominent mythologist Joseph Campbell, film historian Leonard Maltin, and marketing historian Trudy Kehret-Ward served on the board.

"Ellen sensed there was more than nostalgia at work in people's response to these images," said Gordon Whiting, Weis's husband. "They seemed familiar on a deep level, part of an ongoing story."

Weis and her husband formed WeisPR in 1994 in Berkeley, California. The firm represented media and industrial arts innovators such as special effects pioneer Phil Tippett, sound designer-film director Jim LeBrecht, designer Fu-Tung Cheng, and woodworking studio Berkeley Mills.

She later continued her writing pursuits, joining the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, where she studied with James D. Houston and Al Young. Her book "Berkeley: the Life and Spirit of a Remarkable Town" was published in 2004. For the past ten years she served as director of advertising for Bay Nature magazine.

After collapsing in January in the kitchen of her home in Altadena, California, tests revealed the presence of the glioblastoma multiforme, a form of brain cancer. Despite aggressive treatment, her condition deteriorated. She died at home in Altadena on July 27, 2021, in the arms of husband Gordon and son Benjamin. She is survived by them, and by her mother Aimee L. Weis, sister Margaret Chase, both of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and brother Fred Weis, of Arcata, California.

Ellen Havre Weis, founder of San Francisco's Museum of Modern Mythology, died Tuesday, July 27. The cause was brain cancer, her husband, Gordon Whiting, announced today. Weis was sixty-four. Weis and her husband formed WeisPR in 1994 in Berkeley, California.

The Milam and Brownlee family's relationship goes back to reconstruction when both families lived on plantations known in the 1900 census as Beat 5, Tate County, Mississippi. It was said "The Brownlee's were the only sharecroppers allowed to leave the plantation, because they were related to the White People who owned the land." This mattered little to Papa Brownlee. He had a reputation for being a defiant Black man, or the more popular phrase, "an unruly Negro," a trait present in the Brownlee's today.

Lucy Milam, born in slavery worked as domestic for a person only known as "The White Man." She would birth 14 children between her husband Hence Milam, and the man known as the "The White Man."

According to her Great Grandson Frank Wilson, "My father would tell me stories about how they would all go to this white lady's house, and she gave them food, because she knew they were the children of her husband."

Frank Wilson's father, Frank Milam partnered with Mr. Jake Brownlee and the two became the most successful bootleggers in Mississippi. Jake had a brother named Richard Brownlee. Richard was known for being handsome, a barber, and successful gambler. Richard liked to gamble and drink; Frank like to drink and gamble. By 1925, the rear of Richard Brownlee's shop became an official Negro Casino. Some years later, Richard would meet Frank Milam's 1st Cousin, a fair maiden named Robbie, and here is where story begins for the next generation.

In 1950 two families one from Louisiana and one from Mississippi purchased what is now 3161-3163 W Monroe. Among them were Robbie and Richard Brownlee, who could like many others, could pass for white, but instead demanded to be Black, purchased property, and invited other family to join them. The apartments soon became a way station for what would be called the "Great Migration."

3161-3163 Monroe is not a building; it is an institution. An urban motherland, that nurtures with a concrete smile, it is the address on birth certificates, parents birth certificates, grandparents birth certificates, and sadly obituaries. Despite the violence and gentrification of Chicago's Westside, after seven decades the families continue to keep the peace and maintain the property in the heart of East Garfield Park.

Lightning, Tragedy and Lessons Learned about Safety and Awareness: A Look Back at One of Lightning’s Deadliest Strikes

CUMBERLAND, Maine /ScoopCloud/ -- This Sunday marks the 70th anniversary of one of the deadliest lightning strikes in the U.S. and the National Lightning Safety Council is recalling the tragic event to spotlight the dangers of lightning, a common, yet underrated weather peril.

Lives were shattered in an instant on August 1, 1951 when lightning struck a tree at Wind Cave, Wyoming, killing four girl hikers and their leader and injuring nine others. The hikers were on a trek from a girls' camp in Darby Canyon to Wind Cave, Ice Cave, and back.

"Fortunately, most people are more aware of lightning's dangers now than they were in 1951," said John Jensenius, a lightning safety specialist with the National Lightning Safety Council (NLSC).

According to Jensenius, the Center for Disease Control logged 248 U.S. lightning deaths in 1951, which is one more than the combined total of 247 deaths the NLSC has documented for the past 10 years.

Karma Lambert, one of the most seriously injured survivors, vividly remembers events up until the time when lightning struck the tall tree that she and several others were sitting under. Lambert, now 84, attributes her survival to the quick actions of hiking guide, Fred Miller, and several older girls who repeatedly administered "artificial respiration."

Now, 70 years after the event, Kelly Loosli, a professor of Animation and Film at Brigham Young University is interviewing survivors of the Wind Cave lightning incident for a documentary he's preparing. Loosli is the grandson of the then Teton County Sheriff Dwight Loosli, who organized men and horses to rescue the injured and transport the dead in the ensuing hours after the lightning strike.

"My interest stems from my grandfather's involvement in the rescue and the heroism of all those involved," said Loosli. "This was a terrible tragedy and I don't want to see anything like this ever happen again."

Lambert has advice for anyone headed out on a hike, "Check the forecast and if thunderstorms are predicted, just don't go."

Jensenius wants people to know what happened that tragic day in 1951 to stress the importance of monitoring weather conditions to limit the lightning threat.

"Consider canceling or postponing activities if thunderstorms are predicted and remember, when thunder roars, go indoors," advises Jensenius. "Lightning safety is a minor inconvenience that just might save your life."

The National Lightning Safety Council invites educators, government officials and others to help build lightning safe communities by learning more about lightning safety, lightning protection and risk reduction.

New Research Shows Consumers Find Moments of Small Pleasure Beat Big Experiences When It Comes to Well-Being

"On a day-to-day basis, people are carving out small moments of indulgence and savouring them," says Burrell. "Nourishing the body with healthy, nutritious food is an act of self-care and one of the easiest ways we can support not just physical but mental health too. Quality plant-based food in an otherwise ordinary day is a great way to support good mood, especially now when many people are feeling overwhelmed, anxious and emotionally drained after dealing with the pandemic for many months."

Roberts' score was selected from over 120 compositions, which came from 9 different countries. Other featured living composers include Anna Clyne, Arnold Friedman, Mark Berger, Karl Henning, and Lowell's own Aaron Rosenberg.

The highlight of the season also features the work of well-known living composer, Laura Kaminsky. As One - the most produced opera in North America in the last eight years - is a timely and soul-stirring chamber work about the challenges, fears, and joys of its transgender protagonist. With a poignant and witty libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed and film by Ms. Reed, As One is an unforgettable experience. And the LCO production of the opera is a special event: with singers Tona Brown and Rahzé Cheatham, it marks the first time a gender-expansive cast has performed the work.

Brown and Chatham are also two of the few soloists featured this season. The pending order to demolish the Hawkins' building has been halted and everyone is working on various resolutions concerning the matter. "Because Cynthia Hawkins is a small Black business owner, this issue could have been viewed as racially discriminatory, when in fact it was not. In fact, small businesses across the state and the nation even, face matters that are more about miscommunication and bureaucracy then perhaps race and gender. Many small businesses understandably operate in a bubble implementing their day-to-day survival so the California Black Chamber of Commerce, like most business chambers of commerce, are many times underutilized resources. We are here to provide service and support to our constituents and the Hawkins Burgers' situation provides an exemplary case study of how winning resolutions can be accessible for all," explains Jay King, CEO/President of the CBCC.

"So many people came out and promised support and help," cites Cynthia Hawkins, the youngest of 14 children, who runs the restaurant with help from her two daughters and three grandchildren. The Deadliest Days of the Year are Upon Us: 4th of July Holiday Sees Dramatic Spike in Traffic-Related Deaths Every Year

The Dog Days of Summer event is 9-11 a.m. EDT Saturday, July 17. PetPeople of Westerville is sponsor and will award prizes for the pet parade. The Columbus Humane Society will bring adoptable furry friends for guests to play with and hopefully adopt. Attendees can also enjoy live music by Bill Foley, bakery goods and community tours.

China Rescue Dogs Requests Exemption from CDC’s Suspension on Imported Dogs

VASS, N.C. /ScoopCloud/ -- China Rescue Dogs is requesting an exemption for 501(c)(3) rescues from the recent U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suspension of dogs entering the U.S. from countries classified as high risk for rabies.

The suspension, which was announced on June 14, states that effective July 14, 2021, dogs imported from 113 countries which present a high risk of spreading the canine rabies virus variant (CRVV) may not enter the U.S. for a period of at least one year.

The CDC claims that this emergency action is the result of an increase over the last year of incomplete, inadequate, or fraudulent rabies certificates presented upon entry to Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). The CDC has stated that it denies entry to about 200 dogs per year, permitted or otherwise. In its Report justifying the suspension, the CDC claims that, in 2020, this number rose to 450 cases in which dogs were denied entry due to incomplete, inadequate, or fraudulent rabies certificates. This number represents less than 1% of the estimated 60,000 dogs annually imported from high-risk countries.

"No one, least of all non-profits that rescue dogs, disputes the importance of ensuring that dogs with rabies do not enter the United States," said Jill Stewart, founder of China Rescue Dogs. "However, the CDC's solution is heavy-handed, tremendously overreaching, and inhumane. There are many responsible organizations that go above and beyond governmental requirements to help ensure the health and well-being of the dogs they rescue and the adopters they serve."

501(c)(3) rescues such as China Rescue Dogs ensure the dogs they import enter the U.S. with USDA-APHIS issued Import Permits, which require a valid rabies certificate and a health certificate attesting to the age and good health of the dog. The permit also requires that the dog has been vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus and parainfluenza virus ("DHLPP"). This paperwork is thoroughly reviewed and verified by the USDA and Customs Brokers, are uploaded to the CBP system for CDC review, and are reviewed a final time upon landing by CBP. Thus, three government agencies review the documentation before the dog can enter the U.S.

501(c)(3) rescue organizations who have consistently complied with these regulations and provided proper documentation, including those with USDA-issued permits, are included in the CDC's suspension.

China Rescue Dogs requests that the CDC include an exemption to the suspension for all 501(c)(3) rescue organizations, such as themselves, who have continually worked in partnership with the government by only importing dogs with a USDA-APHIS issued Import Permit, with the involvement of CBP, ensuring the validity and completeness of required rabies certificates.

Failure to provide an exemption would mean companies seeking to profit off the sale and/or exploitation of dogs will benefit, while non-profits that rescue abused, abandoned, homeless dogs, many of which are destined for the dog meat trade, will suffer.
