We Are G.A.M.E. Alum DJ Reed’s NFL Career Demonstrates ‘It Takes a Village’

TORRANCE, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Allen Thigpen, co-founder of We Are G.A.M.E., grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey rooting for the New York Jets, even back when they were the Titans. After graduating from Pennsylvania Military College (now Widener University), in Chester, Pennsylvania, Thigpen was commissioned as a second Lieutenant in the United States Army and served as an officer during the Vietnam era.

Fast forward to 2008, and Thigpen - still a Jets fan - founded We Are G.A.M.E. (Getting Athletes Mentoring and Education) with his wife Joyce. A few years later, the Thigpens received an email from Linda Reed, a single parent and cancer survivor in Bakersfield, California. She inquired if her son, DJ, could join the program while attending Independence High School.

The answer was yes. After mentoring DJ through high school, the Thigpens helped to set him up for success in college. Joyce attended Fresno State University's "Dog Days" orientation with DJ and Linda. At the time, it was unheard of for a student-athlete to arrive on campus with their own college counselor.

Ultimately, after some time attending Fresno State, DJ determined that it wasn't the right fit. The Thigpens jumped back in, helping him interview at four different community colleges. DJ chose Cerritos College, where Linda made the three-hour drive to attend every home game. At the same time, Blaze and Cheryl Bhence attended his home games and practices and took him out to dinner frequently. Meanwhile, Joyce developed an education plan, helping DJ get his Associate of Arts degree in just one year.

His performance at Cerritos landed him a football scholarship to Kansas State University, where Allen and Joyce, along with mentor Karen Rogers, regularly attended games. They also traveled to Phoenix to watch DJ and Elijah Walker play in the Cactus Bowl. At that game, DJ literally gave the shirt off his back and his cleats to kids in attendance so they wouldn't leave empty-handed.

After that bowl game, DJ declared for the NFL draft. The We Are G.A.M.E. family got to attend the draft party to hear his name called in the fifth round as he was picked up by the San Francisco 49ers.

The story doesn't end there, though. One day, Allen got a call that DJ had signed with the New York Jets. His football life had now come full circle. As the regular season starts this weekend, you can spot DJ wearing #4 for the Jets, his mentor's longtime team of choice.

The Legacy of 9/11 and the Scientology Movement it Inspired

NEW YORK, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- Out of the smoke and dust that engulfed lower Manhattan 21 years ago rose a humanitarian movement known for its ardent commitment to help: the Scientology Volunteer Ministers-a religious social service of the Church of Scientology.

The 9/11 terror attacks marked a turning point for Scientologists.

More than 800 Scientology Volunteer Ministers served in the aftermath of the attack. They traveled from across the country and abroad, providing support to emergency personnel and bringing order to the chaos. And they continued doing so throughout the entire eight months of the rescue and recovery effort.

"At any time, well over 100 Volunteer Ministers from the Church of Scientology mill around the remains of the World Trade Center," wrote The New York Times on September 20, 2001. "On the day of the attack, they took in food to workers....When rescue workers stagger from the wreckage, the ministers, identified by their T-shirts, try to focus the workers' minds and revive their bodies."

"The Volunteer Ministers worked with great energy and great compassion at Ground Zero, helping to ease the physical burdens and mental strains of the rescue workers," wrote a New York Police Chief in thanks. "The organization, the caring, and the dedication of your Volunteer Ministers were exceptional, very much appreciated, and will long be remembered by those who received their help."

Within hours and the terror attacks, Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige issued a directive that was distributed to Scientologists everywhere: The Wake-Up Call. As its title suggests, it urged Scientologists to treat this event as a change point. And they did. As of September 11, 2001, there were 6,000 Volunteer Ministers worldwide. Today, Scientology Volunteer Ministers are among the world's most widely recognized independent relief organizations, with hundreds of thousands on call to respond to disasters great and small. Whether helping at the sites of natural and man-made disasters or responding to the needs of their neighbors and communities, the bright yellow T-shirt of the Volunteer Ministers has become a symbol of help.

"The answer to this planet's problems will not be found in the material," said Mr. Miscavige in describing what that tragedy represented for the Church. "Of this there can be no question. For if those solutions can't prevent war nation to nation, how then can it be expected to answer questions like love, happiness or peace of mind?"

He also pointed out that providing help in disaster zones is only one part of the picture.

"For while we can help in the worst of circumstances, when compassion itself demands each person to help one another, what about those everyday disasters simmering beneath the social structure? The marital difficulties and familial discord that ruins lives each day? The delinquent child and the parent with nowhere to turn for help? Not to mention oppression and depression, which all too often-with no other help in sight-turns to drugs as a last hope to dull the mental pain?

"And therein lies the greater story of our Volunteer Ministers...They are seen everywhere, in nations across the globe, bringing effective solutions before it is too late. Constantly visiting new communities to offer help with everything from marital difficulties, to tutoring of children, to providing counseling for the lonely."

The pandemic was a practical example of the extent and effectiveness of the movement.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers spent the lockdown serving their communities with food and medicine delivery, operating helplines, providing backup to medical professionals at COVID testing and vaccination centers and helping overloaded medical professionals cope with the care of elderly residents at healthcare facilities. They reached out to other houses of worship to provide training and sanitization to ensure the safety of their congregations. They distributed millions of educational booklets to help people understand and apply the protocols to prevent the spread of the virus.

The Volunteer Ministers movement has become truly grassroots, with hundreds of new Volunteer Ministers groups cropping up in towns and villages from South Africa and Uganda to Nepal, Papua New Guinea and throughout Latin America.

Critical Defect Rate Declined in Q1 2022 Per ACES Quality Management Mortgage QC Industry Trends Report

* Defects in the Income/Employment category continue to remain high.

* The share of appraisal-related defects fell in Q1 2022 after rising in the prior quarter, but signs indicate lenders should pay special attention to this area going forward.

* Purchase and refinance shares remained unchanged from the prior quarter. Conventional loan share continued its multi-quarter trend of decline, with FHA loans filling the void and VA loan share also on the rebound.

* Purchase defects increased specifically I the FHA category, which is expected given purchase loans' dominance in review share and the increase in FHA loans.

"Despite an overall decline in the critical defect rate for Q1 2022, the Income/Employment category remains a glaring problem. Lenders are finding this area a difficult one to rectify, and with staffing changes and new products coming online, it is more important than ever that QC managers get granular findings and feedback to their production group," said ACES Executive Vice President Nick Volpe. "Additionally, as lenders expand the credit box to win the fight for volume, they must be careful not to stretch too far and further exacerbate defects in this category."

Findings for the Q1 2022 ACES Mortgage QC Industry Trends Report are based on post-closing quality control data derived from the ACES Quality Management and Control® benchmarking system and incorporate data from prior quarters and/or calendar years, where applicable. All reviews and defect data evaluated for the report were based on loan audits selected by lenders for full file reviews.

"While the defect increases in three of the four 'core underwriting' categories are cause for concern, it was not all 'doom and gloom' for Q1 2022. Out of the 11 primary loan defect categories ACES tracks, five showed considerable improvement over last quarter, and none more so than the Documentation category, which dropped 37% from 14.57% to 9.09," added Volpe. "This is a tangible example of the importance of quality control reporting. With quality control and quality assurance testing, lenders can course correct and improve the overall quality of their mortgage originations."

Specifically, Proteios' multivariate cell isolation technology provides high-performance, antibody- and magnetic bead-free isolation of cell types in fewer than 30 minutes. Proprietary Proteios Chimeras will be designed and developed to bind to each of the 20 target cell types with high specificity and selectivity through a combination of robotic biological screening, Machine Learning (ML) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation.

Proteios will also incorporate Proteios Chimeras into its cGMP cell therapy manufacturing device - a bench prototype funded under contract by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The device provides end-to-end manufacturing of cell therapies in a closed and fully-automated system with concise control over the multiple cell types that form the basis of cell therapy formulations. Proteios Chimeras will be a major component of consumables for the cGMP cell therapy manufacturing device.

Doctors and other trained medical professionals on the team set up medical stations at the shelters where they examine those affected and administer needed care.

Children are often the hardest hit by disasters like these. So in addition to caring for the physical needs of those displaced by the floods, team members engage the children in extroverting activities to orient them in their current environment and bring them relief from the stress they have experienced.

After the month-over-month rate/term refinance lock figure increased 11 percent in August due to a slight drop in mortgage rates, the index was down 46 percent in August. Total mortgage rate locks by dollar volume decreased 28.5 percent in August, with purchase locks declining 27.8 percent month-over-month and 23.4 percent from a year ago. Cash-out refinances are down 5.3 percent month-over-month. From one year ago, cash-out refinance volume is down 80.0 percent, while rate/term refinance volume has dropped 95.2 percent. Please note that loan sizes were up 8.3 percent over the past year, with the average loan amount increasing from $291k to $315k.

It is important to note that MCT's rate lock activity indices are based on actual dollar volume of locked loans, not number of applications. Especially in a tight purchase market, MCT believes its methodology (using actual loans locked vs. applications) is a more reliable metric. There is a higher likelihood of having multiple applications per funded loan, and prequals do not convert at as high of a rate in the current market as has historically been the case - especially when applications are counted at the early stage of entering a property address.

* 2 Janssen Place, an Italianate Revival built in 1905 by lumber businessman John Henry Tschudy. Interior woodwork features eleven different woods. The current owners bought the home in 1985 and have done an extensive restoration, for which they received a special Preservation Award from the Historic Kansas City Foundation in 1994. The home has also been featured by Hallmark on holiday cards.

* 4343 Campbell Street, a Kansas City shirtwaist built in 1900. The home was formerly the Rockingham Academy for girls, where Joan Crawford attended and lived from 1919-1922. The home was derelict for decades until recently when it was renovated and restored to its former glory.

* 4346 Harrison Street, a stately 1908 brick home featuring original and unique millwork throughout. The home has been renovated and features a large kitchen with wraparound island and a third floor primary bedroom suite.

* 3801 Gillham Road, Pilgrim Chapel and its parsonage house were built in 1941 and 1942. The structure is stone with exposed stone interior walls and timber trusses.
